What should you focus on for a sales interview?
What makes these sales interviews different?
Finding prospects and understanding their needs stand out. Discovery, qualification and cold outreach appeared more often in these sales interviews than across all interviews. Account management, objections, closing and CRM topics also appeared more often than average.
Most questions were at mid level. Start by checking whether you can explain how you find potential customers, decide who is a good fit and handle their concerns. Then check how you explain your account choices and sales results.
Can you explain how you find and check prospects?
“How do you source and validate prospects for outbound sales?” was asked in 4 of 104 interviews. Does your answer cover both finding a lead and deciding whether it is worth contacting?
- Where would you look for target business clients?
- What would you research about an account before reaching out?
- How would you find the person who makes the buying decision?
- What would you say if a prospect asked who was calling or how you got their contact details?
Can you also explain how you would combine calls, email and social outreach?
Can you uncover needs and connect them to a product?
Discovery questions covered customer fit, needs and the people involved in buying. Pitch questions covered tailored messages, demos and business value. Check whether you can explain the link between a customer's needs and what you offer.
- How would you help a hesitant customer share concerns without pressure?
- What evidence would make you decide a prospect is not a fit?
- Which product would you offer, and how does it meet the customer's needs?
- Can you explain its value against a competitor, rather than only list features?
Can you handle competing accounts and difficult conversations?
“How do you prioritize accounts when several clients need your attention?” was asked in 4 of 104 interviews. Can you explain which account you would help first and why?
- How would you help a new customer start using the product?
- What would you do if a customer wanted to leave?
- How would you respond to concerns about price or switching products?
- What would you offer in a negotiation, and how would you ask for commitment?
Can you explain your plans and track results?
Sales strategy and leadership questions appeared in 31 of 104 interviews. They covered market research, commercial plans, launches, partnerships and coaching.
Can you explain how you would choose a market or help a sales team improve its results? For CRM and analytics, can you describe how you would hand over an account, keep customer data accurate, test a campaign and measure its business impact?

Counted by interview, not by mention: a question asked twice in one conversation counts once.
How do you source and validate prospects for outbound sales?
Asked in 4 of 104 interviews · last asked Oct 20 · Scenario · Mid-level
Show answer
I start with our target customer profile and find matching companies through marketing leads, company websites, LinkedIn, referrals, and sales databases. I identify the right contacts and check their roles, contact details, and signs of a relevant need. Before outreach, I check our CRM for duplicates, past contact, and opt-outs, then prioritize the best-fit prospects.
- Use clear criteria such as industry, company size, location, and likely need.
- Find prospects yourself when marketing leads are not available.
- Cross-check contact details and current roles; database records can be outdated.
- Treat signs of need as clues, not proof; confirm interest and timing in conversation.
What the interviewer checks: The interviewer wants to know whether you can build a reliable prospect list and choose who to contact first.
Other ways it was asked
- “How do you source prospects through marketing leads and your own outbound prospecting?”
- “How do you typically source leads for outbound sales when they are not provided by a marketing or data team?”
- “How do you source and validate prospect data for outbound sales?”
How do you prioritize accounts when several clients need your attention?
Asked in 4 of 104 interviews · last asked Oct 21 · Scenario · Mid-level
Show answer
I prioritize accounts by urgency, customer impact, and risk to the relationship, then by sales potential. A serious issue or a firm deadline gets my attention first, not just the largest account. I give each client a clear response time, ask teammates for help when needed, and plan calls around local business hours.
- Handle serious customer issues and firm deadlines first.
- Weigh renewal risk and sales potential, not just account size.
- Set clear response times and share work when needed.
- Plan around time zones and review priorities as needs change.
What the interviewer checks: The interviewer wants to know if you can make sound trade-offs and keep clients informed when demands compete.
Other ways it was asked
- “How do you prioritize accounts?”
- “When you're managing multiple accounts across different regions, how do you prioritize which ones to focus your time on?”
- “If you were managing 20 accounts and they all needed your attention at the same time, how would you prioritize them, and who would get your attention first?”
What would you say separates a top-performing SDR from an average SDR?
Asked in 2 of 104 interviews · last asked Oct 6 · Mid-level
Show answer
A top-performing SDR creates more qualified sales opportunities, not just more activity. They focus on the right prospects, ask good questions, and follow up consistently. They also use feedback and results to improve, and give sales reps clear notes on each prospect’s needs.
- Measure success by qualified opportunities, not just calls or emails.
- Research enough to make outreach relevant without slowing down too much.
- Listen for real needs and qualify honestly.
- Use coaching and results to improve outreach and follow-up.
What the interviewer checks: The interviewer wants to know if you connect consistent effort and learning with quality sales opportunities.
Other ways it was asked
- “What distinguishes a top-performing SDR from an average performer?”
Given Zendesk's strengths, what value does it offer over its competitors?
Asked in 2 of 104 interviews · last asked Apr 20 · Case · Mid-level
Show answer
Zendesk offers a focused customer service platform that brings support channels, customer history, and workflows together. Its ready-made tools and integrations can help teams get started quickly and reduce manual work. Compared with broader platforms, its value is simpler service operations, though the best choice depends on cost and customization needs.
- Connected support channels help agents respond without asking customers to repeat information.
- Salesforce may suit companies wanting deeper links between service and their existing Salesforce CRM.
- Freshworks can compete on ease and price; compare required features and total cost.
What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you connect Zendesk’s strengths to customer needs without making unsupported claims about competitors.
Other ways it was asked
- “How does Zendesk deliver value faster than its competitors?”
- “Given your understanding of Zendesk, its competitive advantages, and its strengths, how is it positioned compared with its competitors?”
- “How do you think Zendesk adds value for its customers?”
Do you know the difference between direct marketing and indirect marketing?
Asked in 2 of 104 interviews · last asked Oct 5 · Concept · Junior
Show answer
Direct marketing reaches specific people and asks them to act, such as replying to an email or booking a call. Indirect marketing builds awareness and trust through things like helpful articles or media coverage. I would use direct marketing to seek a response and indirect marketing to support future sales.
- Direct marketing targets specific people and asks for a clear action.
- Indirect marketing helps people know and trust the brand over time.
- Direct responses are usually easier to track; indirect effects can take longer to measure.
- Both approaches can work together to support sales.
What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you understand how each approach helps attract customers and support sales.
Other ways it was asked
- “Do you know the difference between direct and indirect marketing?”
How would you identify target business clients and decide which products to offer them?
Asked in 2 of 104 interviews · last asked Aug 11 · Case · Mid-level
Show answer
I would target businesses whose needs our products can meet. I would use industry, company size, and buying signals to build a shortlist, then ask about their problems, budget, and timing. I would offer the product that best solves their main problem and focus on clients most likely to benefit and buy.
- Use customer results and market research to define which businesses are a good fit.
- Confirm needs with the client rather than relying only on company data.
- Check budget, buying timeline, and who makes the decision.
- Match the product to the need; do not push a poor fit.
What the interviewer checks: The interviewer wants to see whether you can find suitable clients and match products to real business needs.
Other ways it was asked
- “How would you choose a target client and matching product in a go-to-market plan?”
- “How would you identify prospective business clients and determine which products to offer them?”
How would you respond when a prospect asks how you got their contact information?
Asked in 2 of 104 interviews · last asked Jul 31 · Scenario
Show answer
I would tell them exactly where we got their contact details. If I did not know, I would say so and offer to check, rather than guess. If they asked not to be contacted again, I would end the sales pitch and follow our process to stop further contact.
- Name the actual source, such as a form, referral, or purchased list.
- Do not claim they gave permission unless you can confirm it.
- Answer calmly and respect their privacy concerns.
- Honor requests to stop contact.
What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you are honest, handle privacy concerns calmly, and respect requests to stop contact.
Other ways it was asked
- “How would you respond if a prospective solar customer asked how you got their name?”
- “A prospect asks how you got their contact information during an outbound electricity sales call. How would you respond?”
How would you respond when a prospect asks who is calling?
Asked in 2 of 104 interviews · last asked Mar 13 · Scenario
Show answer
I would give my name and company, then briefly explain why I am calling. If they ask whether it is a cold call, I would say yes if it is. I would then ask if they have a moment to talk.
- State your name and company clearly.
- Explain the reason for the call in one short sentence.
- Be honest if the call is unsolicited.
- Respect their time and accept a request to end the call.
Code“Hi, I’m Alex from Sunway Solar. I’m calling to ask if you’re interested in solar panels for your home. Do you have a moment?” If asked whether it is a cold call: “Yes, it is. We haven’t spoken before.”What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you can introduce yourself clearly, be honest, and respect the prospect’s time.
Other ways it was asked
- “How would you respond when a prospect asks what the call is about?”
- “How would you respond when a prospect asks whether your call is a cold call?”
- “How would you respond when a prospective solar customer asks who is calling?”
How would you encourage a hesitant customer to share their needs and concerns without pressuring them?
Asked in 2 of 104 interviews · last asked Aug 24 · Scenario
Show answer
I would ask permission to explore what they need and make clear they can choose what to share. I would ask one open question, then listen without interrupting or rushing into a sales pitch. I would check that I understood their concern and respect their choice if they were not ready to talk.
- Start with an easy, open question about their goals or current situation.
- Ask one question at a time and give them time to answer.
- Repeat their concern in your own words to check your understanding.
- Let them pause or decline without pushing for more detail.
CodeWould you be comfortable telling me what you hope to improve? [Pause and listen.] It sounds like changing your current setup feels risky. Have I understood that correctly? We can leave it there if you would rather not go into detail. What the interviewer checks: The interviewer wants to see whether you can build trust, listen carefully, and explore concerns while respecting boundaries.
Other ways it was asked
- “Imagine a potential customer is hesitant to share their needs with you. How would you approach building rapport and encouraging them to open up?”
- “Imagine a potential customer is hesitant to share their needs. How would you approach building rapport and encouraging them to open up?”
- “How would you encourage the customer to share underlying concerns without making them feel pressured?”
What criteria and evidence do you use to disqualify a sales prospect?
Asked in 2 of 104 interviews · last asked Sep 12 · Scenario · Mid-level
Show answer
I disqualify a prospect when clear evidence shows we cannot meet their needs or they cannot buy from us. I use buyer statements, account facts, and firm buying requirements, not guesses. Silence alone is not enough to disqualify them. If timing or budget could change, I pause outreach and set a date to check again.
- Look for a confirmed mismatch in needs, product fit, service area, or required terms.
- For wholesale leads, confirm minimum order size, delivery needs, and payment requirements.
- Record the reason and supporting evidence before removing the prospect from active outreach.
- Separate a lasting mismatch from temporary delays or unanswered messages.
What the interviewer checks: The interviewer checks whether you protect selling time without giving up on buyers who may qualify later.
Other ways it was asked
- “How do you decide that an account is truly disqualified rather than just unresponsive? What criteria and evidence do you require before removing it from active prospecting?”
- “What specific signals would make you disqualify a wholesale lead early?”
What discovery and qualification framework do you use, and what questions do you ask first?
Asked in 2 of 104 interviews · last asked Sep 25 · Scenario · Mid-level
Show answer
I use BANT—budget, authority, need, and timing—but start with the customer's needs. My first question is, “What do you need from a wholesale supplier?” Then, “What order volume and budget do you expect?” Third, “Who approves the purchase, and when do you need the first delivery?”
- Ask what is not working with their current supplier and what they want to improve.
- Check whether order size, delivery needs, and payment terms fit what we can offer.
- Use BANT as a guide, not a script; follow up on unclear answers.
What the interviewer checks: The interviewer wants to see a clear process for understanding needs and deciding whether a prospect is worth pursuing.
Other ways it was asked
- “When qualifying a new wholesale prospect, which framework do you default to, and what are the first three questions you ask to confirm fit?”
- “What framework do you use for customer discovery and qualification?”
How would you respond when a prospect says they are not interested?
Asked in 2 of 104 interviews · last asked Jul 27 · Scenario · Mid-level
Show answer
I would stay calm, acknowledge their response, and avoid pushing. If they seem open to talking, I would ask one short question to understand whether it is bad timing or not a good fit. If they are irritated or clearly want to stop, I would thank them and end the call.
- Respect their time and keep your tone calm.
- Ask a brief question only if they seem willing to continue.
- Suggest another time only if timing is the issue and they agree.
- Honor any request not to be contacted again.
What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you can handle rejection, listen, and respect boundaries without missing a genuine opportunity.
Other ways it was asked
- “When a business owner answers a cold call irritated or immediately says, "Not interested," how would you respond?”
- “When a business owner says they are not interested during a cold call, how would you respond?”
- “What will you do if a customer says, “I’m not interested”?”
How do you grow an existing account?
Asked in 2 of 104 interviews · last asked Oct 20 · Case · Mid-level
Show answer
I grow an existing account by helping the customer get value from what they already buy, then finding other needs we can meet. I review their results, ask about new goals, and build relationships with other decision-makers. When there is a clear fit, I propose an upgrade or another product and agree on how we will measure success.
- Check customer results and resolve service problems before pushing for more sales.
- Ask about changing goals, unused features, and needs in other teams.
- Build relationships beyond your main contact.
- Recommend more spending only when it offers clear value to the customer.
What the interviewer checks: The interviewer wants to know whether you can increase sales while protecting customer trust and retention.
How do you retain an unhappy customer?
Asked in 2 of 104 interviews · last asked Oct 20 · Scenario · Mid-level
Show answer
I listen to the customer, acknowledge the problem, and ask what would make things right. I agree on a realistic fix, explain who will handle it, and set a clear deadline. I follow up to check that the fix worked and address the cause so it does not happen again.
- Understand why the customer is unhappy before offering a solution.
- Take responsibility for getting help, even if another team must fix the problem.
- Only promise what you can deliver; a discount may not solve the real issue.
- Respect the customer's choice if they still want to leave.
What the interviewer checks: The interviewer wants to know whether you can rebuild trust and solve problems without making false promises.
Other ways it was asked
- “How do you manage retention or an unhappy customer?”
Tell me about a time you identified and acted on an opportunity to grow an existing account.
Asked in 2 of 104 interviews · last asked Oct 21 · Behavioral · Mid-level
Show answer
I grew an existing account after usage reports showed the customer was close to their plan limit. I asked about their plans and learned they were adding another team. I proposed a larger plan and explained the cost compared with paying extra usage fees. They upgraded because it supported their growth and made costs easier to predict.
- Use account data to spot a possible need.
- Ask the customer to confirm the need before proposing an upgrade.
- Explain the value and cost trade-off.
- State what the customer bought and why.
What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you use data and customer conversations to find and close useful growth opportunities.
Other ways it was asked
- “Can you tell me about a time when you looked at data and metrics and spotted an opportunity to grow an account or upsell something to a customer?”
- “Can you describe an opportunity you had to sell to, upsell, or grow an existing client account? How did you identify the opportunity, and what did you do?”
How would you handle multiple clients at the same time?
Asked in 2 of 104 interviews · last asked Oct 1 · Scenario
Show answer
I would track each client’s needs, deadlines, and next steps in a CRM or task list. I would prioritize by urgency and impact, and set aside time for follow-ups. I would give clients clear timelines and ask my team for help if deadlines were at risk.
- Keep clear notes and a next step for every client.
- Prioritize urgent needs and commitments, not just the loudest client.
- Schedule follow-ups so quieter clients are not forgotten.
- Tell clients early if timelines change.
What the interviewer checks: The interviewer wants to know whether you can stay organized and keep promises while serving several clients.
Other ways it was asked
- “How would you handle multiple clients at the same time, especially more than two?”
How would you maintain a long-term relationship with a client?
Asked in 2 of 104 interviews · last asked Oct 1 · Scenario
Show answer
I would stay in touch, keep my promises, and make sure our product still meets the client’s needs. I would agree on how often to check in and ask about their goals and concerns. If a problem came up, I would take responsibility for helping resolve it and keep them updated.
- Agree on a useful contact schedule, not just calls when you want to sell.
- Follow through on promises and give clear updates.
- Listen for changing needs and check that the client is getting value.
- Offer more only when it helps the client.
What the interviewer checks: The interviewer wants to know whether you can build trust and keep clients satisfied over time.
How would you preserve trust when your product cannot fully solve a customer's problem?
Asked once · last asked Aug 24 · Scenario · Mid-level
Show answer
I would be clear about what our product can and cannot solve. I would confirm which needs are essential and explain what would remain unsolved. If a workaround or another provider could help, I would discuss it honestly. If a complete solution is essential, I would say we are not the right fit rather than promise something we cannot deliver.
- Ask which needs are essential before suggesting a partial solution.
- Explain limits clearly, including any extra work or cost a workaround would require.
- Do not promise future features or results you cannot confirm.
- Be willing to lose the sale rather than sell a poor fit.
What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you can be honest about limits and protect trust without pushing a poor fit.
Other ways it was asked
- “How would you handle a conversation when the customer’s problem genuinely can’t be solved by your product, while keeping trust intact?”
- “Suppose a customer has a complex problem that your product does not fully address. How would you handle that conversation while still maintaining trust and professionalism?”
- “If a customer insists on a complete solution that your product cannot provide, how would you respond while keeping the relationship constructive?”
In mortgage lending sales, what does building a pipeline of mortgage applications involve, and how does it differ from building broker relationships or supporting submissions?
Asked once · last asked Mar 5 · Concept · Mid-level
Show answer
Building a pipeline means finding potential borrowers and helping them move toward a mortgage application. I would check their needs and likely eligibility, follow up, and track each case. Building broker relationships creates a source of referrals, while supporting submissions helps get application documents complete and sent to the lender.
- Pipeline building focuses on bringing in potential borrowers and turning interest into applications.
- Broker relationships can supply leads, but relationships alone are not an application pipeline.
- Submission support focuses on documents and processing, rather than finding new business.
- These tasks can overlap, but a submitted application is not an approved loan.
What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you understand the difference between generating applications, developing referral sources, and handling paperwork.
How would you manage a potential conflict of interest between a side business and a medical representative role?
Asked once · last asked Mar 31 · Scenario · Mid-level
Show answer
I would tell my manager and HR about my side business and ask for a conflict-of-interest review. I would keep its work, money, and records separate from my medical representative role. I would never use company time, customer contacts, or confidential information for it. If the conflict could not be resolved, I would stop the conflicting activity.
- Disclose any overlap with company products, customers, or suppliers.
- Follow company policy and get written approval if required.
- Do not let personal income influence product recommendations or relationships with healthcare professionals.
- Report changes that could create a new conflict.
What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you can protect trust, follow policy, and put professional duties before personal gain.

How this list is made
Every question here was asked by a real interviewer in a real job interview that a candidate ran MeetAssist in. After the call, the interviewer's questions are pulled from the transcript. Practice sessions, tests, exams and anything that was not a job interview are dropped.
Questions are rewritten so they make sense on their own: names of people, employers and clients are removed, and speech-to-text mistakes are fixed. Small talk, logistics and questions about one candidate's own résumé are left out. Rephrasings of the same question are merged, and the count is the number of different interviews it came up in.
The interviews come from candidates who use MeetAssist, so they lean towards software, data and AI roles: the shares describe these interviews, not every Sales interview. Answers to the most asked questions are written and checked by an editor; a "common mistake" is shown only when reviews of real answers in these interviews show it, with the count.
104 interviews, 75 candidates, Nov 2025 to Oct 2026. Updated every month with new interviews.
