What should you focus on for a Financial Analyst interview?

What makes these interviews different?

Financial modeling, valuation, and markets stand out. These topics appeared more often in these Financial Analyst interviews than across all interviews. Accounting, forecasting, and credit risk also appeared more often than average.

Senior-level and mid-level questions each made up a larger share than junior-level questions. Go beyond naming formulas: can you explain why you chose a model assumption, how you checked it, and what supports an investment view?

Which accounting questions should you work through?

The most asked questions include EBITDA, unlevered free cash flow, and accounting profit versus cash flow. Use these checks to review the links between earnings and cash:

  • Can you explain how to calculate EBITDA and what it shows?
  • Can you move from EBITDA to unlevered free cash flow, including depreciation, taxes, capital spending, and working capital?
  • Can you explain how accounting profit differs from cash flow?
  • If earnings per share beat expectations but revenue misses, what would you check to separate real improvement from one-time items or financial engineering?

Can you explain your model and valuation choices?

Modeling questions covered forecasts, scenarios, assumptions, balance checks, debt schedules, and circularity. Valuation questions included discounted cash flow, comparable companies, and project returns.

  • Which sources would you use to get data for a financial model?
  • How would you check the assumptions and whether the model balances?
  • For a high-growth company, would you estimate terminal value using a long-term growth rate or an exit multiple? What evidence supports your choice?
  • Can you explain net present value, its components, and internal rate of return?

How much Excel and coding should you review?

Excel and data analysis appeared in 32 of 98 interviews. Writing code was part of 4 of 98 interviews. Keep spreadsheet and data checks separate from coding tasks.

Can you explain how VLOOKUP finds data? Can you write SQL to find customer IDs with transactions above the average for the last six months? For market data work, can you check in Python that each decision uses only data released by that time?

Can you explain your findings and business choices?

Communication questions covered client relationships, investment memos, reports, presentations, priorities, and quality under deadlines.

Can you explain your findings to someone without a finance background? How would you check a report under a tight deadline? For business cases, work through how you would price a new workplace savings product or estimate the number of gas stations in Houston.

  1. How do you calculate unlevered free cash flow from EBITDA, including depreciation, taxes, capex, and working capital?

    Asked in 2 of 98 interviews · last asked Oct 3 · Concept · Mid-level

    Show answer

EBITDA means earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization. I subtract depreciation and amortization to get EBIT, then subtract taxes calculated on EBIT without interest deductions. I add depreciation and amortization back, subtract capital expenditures, and subtract the increase in operating net working capital. This gives unlevered free cash flow.

    • Depreciation and amortization reduce taxable income but are added back because they are noncash expenses.
    • An increase in operating net working capital reduces cash flow; a decrease increases it.
    • Operating net working capital excludes cash and debt.
    • Unlevered free cash flow excludes interest payments and debt borrowing or repayment.
    Code
    EBITDA = 100; depreciation and amortization = 20
    EBIT = 100 − 20 = 80
    Operating taxes = 80 × 25% = 20
Capex = 30; increase in operating net working capital = 10
    Unlevered free cash flow = 80 − 20 + 20 − 30 − 10 = 40

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you can turn operating earnings into cash flow before financing costs.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “What is EBITDA, and how do you calculate free cash flow from it?”
    • “How is depreciation treated when calculating free cash flow from EBITDA?”
    • “What does EBITDA stand for, and how is depreciation treated when calculating free cash flow from EBITDA?”
  2. How do you calculate EBITDA, and what is it used to show?

Asked in 2 of 98 interviews · last asked Jul 31 · Concept · Junior

    Show answer

EBITDA means earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization. I calculate it by adding net interest expense, income taxes, depreciation, and amortization back to net income. It helps compare company earnings before financing costs, tax effects, and noncash asset charges.

    • EBITDA is not cash flow: it ignores working capital changes and capital spending.
    • Check definitions and adjustments before comparing companies.
    • Cash EBITDA has no single standard formula; clarify which adjustments are included.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer checks whether you can calculate EBITDA, explain its use, and distinguish it from cash flow.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “How do we arrive at EBITDA?”
    • “How do we arrive at cash EBITDA?”
    • “What does EBITDA mean, and how is it calculated?”
  3. When a company beats EPS but misses revenue, what are the first three things you check to determine whether it reflects real fundamental improvement or mostly one-time items or financial engineering?

Asked in 2 of 98 interviews · last asked Oct 18 · Case · Senior

    Show answer

First, I check why revenue missed: weaker demand, pricing, timing, or currency. Second, I check whether margins improved through lasting cost savings or temporary cuts, and whether cash flow supports earnings. Third, I compare EPS with consensus on the same basis and separate operating gains from one-time items, lower taxes, and buybacks.

    • Separate sales volume and pricing from currency effects and timing shifts.
    • Check whether margin gains can last without hurting future sales; use cash flow as supporting evidence.
    • Reconcile reported and adjusted EPS, including unusual gains, excluded costs, tax rates, and diluted share count.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you can separate lasting business improvement from accounting effects and financing choices.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “When a company beats consensus EPS but misses revenue, what are the first three things you check to judge whether the beat reflects sustainable operating performance?”
  4. Could you explain the difference between accounting profit and cash flow?

Asked in 2 of 98 interviews · last asked Oct 1 · Concept · Junior

    Show answer

Accounting profit is revenue minus expenses for a period. Cash flow tracks cash coming in and going out. Profit can include sales before customers pay and expenses, such as depreciation, that do not involve a current cash payment. A company can be profitable but still lack cash to pay its bills.

    • Profit follows accrual accounting: revenue is recorded when earned, and expenses when incurred, not necessarily when cash moves.
    • Cash flow covers operating, investing, and financing activities.
    • Borrowing brings in cash but is not revenue or profit.
    • Unpaid customer invoices can increase profit without increasing cash.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you understand why profit does not always mean cash is available.

  5. How does VLOOKUP work in Excel, and how do you use it to find data?

Asked in 2 of 98 interviews · last asked Sep 24 · Tooling · Junior

    Show answer

VLOOKUP searches the first column of a selected range and returns a value from another column in the same row. I use it to match records, such as finding a price by product code. I specify the lookup value, range, return column number, and FALSE for an exact match.

    • The lookup column must be first in the range; VLOOKUP cannot return values to its left.
    • Count the return column from the start of the selected range.
    • FALSE finds an exact match; TRUE or an omitted argument uses approximate matching and requires ascending lookup order.
    • If an exact match is missing, VLOOKUP returns #N/A; if duplicates exist, it returns the first match.
    Code
A2:A100 contains product codes; B2:B100 contains prices.
D2 contains the product code to find.
    =VLOOKUP(D2,$A$2:$B$100,2,FALSE)
This returns the matching price or #N/A if the code is missing.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you can set up a reliable lookup and choose the right match type.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “How do you use VLOOKUP in Excel to find a value?”
    • “How does VLOOKUP work, and when would you use it?”
  6. What sources do you use to obtain data for a financial model?

    Asked in 2 of 98 interviews · last asked Aug 26 · Concept · Mid-level

    Show answer

I use company financial statements, internal accounting records, budgets, and operating data. I also use regulatory filings, industry reports, and trusted market data for outside assumptions. I first list the inputs the model needs, confirm access with data owners, and check dates, units, and consistency before using them.

    • Choose data based on the model’s purpose and main business drivers.
    • Use reliable sources and match reporting periods, currencies, and units.
    • Confirm access, coverage, and update frequency early.
    • Document sources and clearly label estimates where data is missing.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer wants to know whether you can find reliable inputs and spot data gaps before building the model.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “What data do you need to build a financial model?”
    • “When you build a financial model, how do you identify and source the required datasets, and ensure they are available?”
  7. How would you price a new retirement or workplace savings product from scratch?

Asked in 2 of 98 interviews · last asked May 31 · Case · Senior

    Show answer

I would set a price that covers costs, earns a sustainable margin, and gives employers and employees clear value. I would assess customer needs, competing products, and setup, servicing, investment, and compliance costs. Then I would test fee options under different participation and savings levels. Before launch, I would check legal requirements and test customer willingness to pay.

    • Decide which fees employers pay and which employees pay.
    • Compare fixed fees, fees per employee, and fees based on account balances.
    • Model break-even scale and margins under lower participation, smaller balances, and market falls.
    • Keep fees clear, check local rules, and assess their effect on employees’ retirement savings.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you can balance customer value, costs, risk, and profit when setting a price.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “How would you approach pricing a new retirement savings or employee savings product?”
  8. How many gas stations do you think there are in Houston?

    Asked in 2 of 98 interviews · last asked Oct 6 · Mid-level

    Show answer

I would estimate about 900 gas stations within Houston city limits. Assume 2.4 million residents, one car per two residents, and one weekly fill-up per car. At an assumed 200 fill-ups per station daily, that gives roughly 860 stations. I would round to 900, but commuters and highway traffic could raise the estimate.

    • Define the area: Houston city limits, not the wider metro area.
    • Label population, car ownership, and station traffic as assumptions.
    • Divide weekly fuel stops by weekly fuel stops per station.
    • Treat the result as a rough estimate, not a verified count.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you can build a reasonable estimate, explain assumptions, and do simple math.

  9. How do you estimate terminal value for a high-growth company in a DCF: using perpetuity growth or an exit multiple? What evidence would make you choose one over the other?

Asked in 2 of 98 interviews · last asked Oct 18 · Case · Senior

    Show answer

I use perpetuity growth when evidence supports stable long-term growth, margins, and reinvestment needs. I favor an exit multiple when mature peers with similar growth and risk provide reliable valuation evidence. For a high-growth company, I extend the forecast until growth settles rather than assume today's growth lasts forever. I cross-check both methods and test key assumptions.

    • Perpetuity growth must be below the discount rate and consistent with sustainable long-term economic growth.
    • Stable cash flow must include the reinvestment needed to support growth.
    • Exit multiples should reflect comparable mature businesses, normal market conditions, and a consistent financial measure.
    • Discount terminal value back to today; test sensitivity to growth, discount rates, and exit multiples.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether your terminal assumptions are supported by evidence rather than chosen to raise the valuation.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “When you build a DCF for a mature company, how do you estimate terminal value and decide whether to use a perpetuity growth approach or an exit multiple approach?”
  10. What is NPV, what do its components represent, and what is IRR?

    Asked in 2 of 98 interviews · last asked Jun 18 · Concept · Mid-level

    Show answer

NPV, or net present value, is future cash flows discounted to today, minus the initial investment. Cash flows are expected net amounts received or paid. The discount rate reflects required return and risk; timing determines how long each flow is discounted. IRR is the discount rate that makes NPV zero.

    • NPV measures value in money; IRR expresses a return as a percentage.
    • A positive NPV means the project adds value at the chosen discount rate.
    • When choosing between competing projects, favor higher NPV over higher IRR, assuming comparable risks and constraints.
    • Cash flows that change signs more than once can produce multiple IRRs or no IRR.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer checks whether you understand discounted cash flow, its inputs, and how NPV and IRR guide investment decisions.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “What is the difference between IRR and NPV?”
  11. What does WACC mean, and how do you calculate it?

Asked in 2 of 98 interviews · last asked Sep 30 · Concept · Junior

    Show answer

    WACC means weighted average cost of capital: the average return a company’s debt and equity investors require. For a company funded by debt and common equity, WACC = [E / (E + D)] × Re + [D / (E + D)] × Rd × (1 − T).

    • E and D are the market values of equity and debt, not their book values.
    • Re is the cost of equity; Rd is the current cost of debt.
    • T is the marginal corporate tax rate; the tax adjustment assumes interest is fully deductible.
    • Use WACC to discount cash flows available to all investors when their risk matches the company’s risk.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer checks whether you understand funding costs, market-value weights, and the tax benefit of debt.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “What is the formula for WACC?”
  12. When comparing SaaS peers, which three to five KPIs would you benchmark first, and why?

Asked in 2 of 98 interviews · last asked Oct 18 · Case · Senior

    Show answer

I would start with ARR growth, net revenue retention, gross margin, CAC payback, and free cash flow margin. They show growth, customer expansion or loss, delivery costs, sales efficiency, and cash generation. I would compare companies with similar customers, products, and scale, using consistent metric definitions.

    • ARR growth measures recurring revenue growth; net revenue retention excludes new customers and shows existing customer performance.
    • Gross margin shows revenue left after delivery costs; check whether peers classify those costs consistently.
    • CAC payback measures how long customer gross profit takes to recover acquisition costs; shorter is generally better.
    • Free cash flow margin shows cash generation relative to revenue; upfront annual billing can boost it temporarily.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer wants to see whether you balance growth, customer health, efficiency, and cash generation in a fair comparison.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “When comparing SaaS companies with peers, which four to six metrics do you prioritize to assess the quality of the peer group, and why?”
  13. Which technical obstacles are most challenging to assess accurately in solar investments?

Asked in 2 of 98 interviews · last asked Oct 14 · Case · Senior

    Show answer

The hardest technical risks to assess are future power output, equipment life, and grid limits. I would review sunlight data, expected energy losses, panel wear, and the grid connection study. These estimates affect revenue, repair costs, and the cash available to repay debt.

    • Check independent energy forecasts, including weather variation, shading, dirt, and heat losses.
    • Review panel degradation, inverter reliability, and likely replacement costs.
    • Assess grid connection delays, export limits, and forced reductions in output.
    • Test how lower output or higher costs affect returns and debt payments.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you can link uncertain technical findings to project cash flow and investment risk.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “What types of technical assessments most often drive investment decisions in solar projects?”
  14. What’s the difference between an ETF and a mutual fund?

Asked in 2 of 98 interviews · last asked Aug 24 · Concept · Junior

    Show answer

An ETF trades on an exchange during the day at market prices. A mutual fund is bought or sold through the fund or a broker at the next calculated net asset value, usually after the market closes. Both pool investors’ money, and either can be actively managed or track an index.

    • ETF market prices can differ from the value of their underlying holdings.
    • Mutual fund orders receive the next calculated price, not a live trading price.
    • ETFs involve bid-ask spreads and possible commissions; both types charge fund expenses.
    • ETFs often have lower fees, but costs vary by fund.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer checks whether you understand how trading, pricing, management style, and costs differ.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “What is the difference between a mutual fund and an exchange-traded fund (ETF), and how do their trading mechanisms differ?”
    • “What are the differences between ETFs and mutual funds?”
  15. How would you build a curve-consistent relative value trade between a SOFR strip and a 2s5s swap spread view, and which instruments or hedges would you use?

Asked in 2 of 98 interviews · last asked Oct 15 · Case · Senior

    Show answer

I would compare strip-implied SOFR OIS rates with quoted swaps, matching dates and adjusting for futures convexity. I would express the 2s5s spread view with swaps against Treasuries, using SOFR futures for relative value and rate hedges. I would size hedges by key-rate DV01, not notional, leaving only the intended spread and basis exposure.

    • Use consistent SOFR projection and discounting; match IMM accrual periods and handle maturity gaps.
    • Calculate futures contracts from dollar DV01 in each maturity bucket, rather than matching total DV01 alone.
    • A swap spread is the swap fixed rate minus the Treasury yield; SOFR futures alone cannot reproduce it.
    • Monitor convexity, futures–OIS basis, Treasury repo costs, and margin liquidity; Treasury futures also introduce delivery basis.
    Code
View: the 5-year swap spread widens relative to the 2-year spread.
5-year leg: pay fixed SOFR OIS and buy Treasuries, matching DV01.
2-year leg: receive fixed SOFR OIS and short Treasuries, matching DV01.
Scale the spread legs to equal spread DV01.
If strip-implied rates are too high versus swaps: buy SOFR futures and pay fixed OIS.
Size this basis overlay separately; hedge unwanted key-rate exposure without removing the spread view.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you can connect futures, swaps, and Treasuries while separating the intended trade from unwanted risks.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “How would you construct and risk-manage a relative-value trade between a SOFR futures strip and an OIS swap or swap spread?”
    • “How would you construct and risk-manage a relative-value trade between a SOFR futures strip and an OIS swap or swap spread, including hedge ratios and key basis risks?”
    • “How would you build a curve-consistent RV trade between a SOFR three-month IMM strip and a 2s5s swap spread view?”
  16. How do you prevent lookahead and survivorship bias when constructing a rates universe and trading signals, including on-the-run/off-the-run selection, roll calendars, and benchmark definitions?

Asked in 2 of 98 interviews · last asked Oct 15 · Scenario · Senior

    Show answer

I rebuild each day's universe using only information and instruments available then, keeping bonds that later matured or disappeared. I define on-the-run and off-the-run status using rules and dates known then. I set roll rules in advance and use historical benchmark definitions. Signals use data available before execution, allowing for publication delays and revisions.

    • Track historical trading eligibility, including when-issued trading where allowed; do not start from today's bond list.
    • Define exactly when new issues become on-the-run and older issues become off-the-run; conventions can differ.
    • Apply preset roll rules using calendars available then, with executable prices and trading costs.
    • Use original data releases and benchmark constituents, weights, and methods effective then, not later revisions.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer checks whether your backtest reflects what a trader could actually know and trade at each date.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “How do you prevent lookahead and survivorship bias in rates backtests, especially in roll logic and historical instrument availability?”
    • “How do you prevent lookahead and survivorship bias when constructing the rates universe?”
  17. When you have a long Word report where multilevel numbering starts restarting or jumping after an edit, what exact steps do you take to diagnose and fix it without reformatting the whole document?

    Asked in 2 of 98 interviews · last asked Oct 9 · Tooling · Mid-level

    Show answer

I first check paragraph marks, heading styles, and list settings around the break. I compare a broken heading with a correct one to find whether the cause is a style, list, or restart setting. I reconnect affected paragraphs to the existing list and fix only the incorrect settings. Then I check numbering and indents throughout the report.

    • Each list level should link to its intended paragraph style, such as Heading 1 or Heading 2.
    • Continue an accidentally restarted list, but keep intentional restarts.
    • Set number formats and indents in the multilevel list settings, not with typed numbers or spaces.
    • Menu names vary by Word version; these steps use desktop Word for Windows.
    Code
    1. Save a copy. Turn on Home > Show/Hide (¶).
    2. Compare styles and list levels on correct and broken headings; inspect nearby breaks.
    3. Apply the intended heading style to any incorrectly styled paragraph.
    4. For an accidental restart, right-click its number and choose Continue Numbering, if available.
    5. Otherwise, use Set Numbering Value > Continue from previous list; check the result.
    6. For recurring faults, click a correct heading: Home > Multilevel List > Define New Multilevel List > More.
    7. Check each level's Link level to style, number format, alignment, and text indent.
    8. For lower levels, check Restart list after; change only incorrect settings.
    9. Check affected headings, later sections, and intentional restarts; update the table of contents.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you can diagnose Word's list structure and make targeted repairs without damaging the report.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “When multilevel numbering breaks, restarts randomly, or uses the wrong indent or mixed formats in a report with multiple sections, what steps do you take to diagnose and fix it without retyping numbers?”
  18. How would you prepare a founder with a weak pitch deck, unclear positioning, and unrealistic valuation expectations to speak with investors?

Asked in 2 of 98 interviews · last asked Oct 6 · Case · Senior

    Show answer

I would first clarify the target customer, problem, and why the company is different. Then I would rebuild the deck around evidence, financial assumptions, funding needs, and milestones. I would challenge the valuation using comparable funding rounds and show the dilution at different prices. Finally, I would rehearse tough questions and target investors who fit the company’s stage and sector.

    • Check customer evidence and business metrics before changing the slides.
    • Connect the funding request to realistic costs, cash runway, and clear milestones.
    • Use comparable companies carefully; stage, growth, and funding terms affect valuation.
    • Practice honest answers about risks and prepare supporting documents for investor review.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you can challenge a founder constructively and build a credible, evidence-based investment case.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “A founder comes to you with a weak pitch deck, unclear positioning, and unrealistic valuation expectations. Walk me through exactly how you would prepare them to speak with investors.”
    • “Founder comes to you with a weak pitch deck, unclear positioning, and unrealistic valuation expectations. Walk me through exactly how you would prepare them to speak with investors.”
  19. How do you adapt technical findings for senior management, finance, auditors, and nontechnical audiences?

    Asked in 2 of 98 interviews · last asked Oct 16 · Scenario · Mid-level

    Show answer

I keep the facts consistent but adapt the focus and detail. For senior management, I lead with the recommendation, business impact, and risks. For finance, I explain assumptions and financial effects; for auditors, I provide sources, methods, and supporting records. For nontechnical audiences, I use plain language and simple charts, while keeping key limits clear.

    • Lead with what the audience needs to decide or verify.
    • Keep findings, assumptions, and uncertainty consistent across presentations.
    • Make audit evidence traceable from source data to conclusions.
    • Put detailed calculations in supporting material, not the main message.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you can make analysis useful to different audiences without losing accuracy.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “How do you structure a technical result and present it to different audiences, such as senior management, finance, and external auditors?”
    • “When revising a technical analysis for clarity, how do you prioritize what to communicate to technical and nontechnical audiences?”
  20. How do you use slide master layouts, placeholders, theme fonts, and colors to enforce layout consistency across a 30–50-slide executive deck while still allowing a few special pages?

    Asked in 2 of 98 interviews · last asked Oct 9 · Tooling · Mid-level

    Show answer

I use one slide master with theme fonts and colors, plus a small set of layouts for common slide types. I use placeholders to keep titles, text, and charts in consistent positions. For special pages, I add dedicated layouts under the same master. I check the full deck for manual formatting that breaks those rules.

    • Choose layouts for recurring needs, such as summaries, charts, comparisons, and section breaks.
    • Use placeholders to standardize content position, size, and text formatting.
    • Use theme fonts and colors; direct formatting can override them.
    • Give special pages dedicated layouts while keeping shared branding and title styles.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you can build reusable slide standards without making every page look identical.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “When you redesign a slide master for a presentation deck, how do you decide which layouts to include so teams have enough flexibility without going off track?”

How this list is made

Every question here was asked by a real interviewer in a real job interview that a candidate ran MeetAssist in. After the call, the interviewer's questions are pulled from the transcript. Practice sessions, tests, exams and anything that was not a job interview are dropped.

Questions are rewritten so they make sense on their own: names of people, employers and clients are removed, and speech-to-text mistakes are fixed. Small talk, logistics and questions about one candidate's own résumé are left out. Rephrasings of the same question are merged, and the count is the number of different interviews it came up in.

The interviews come from candidates who use MeetAssist, so they lean towards software, data and AI roles: the shares describe these interviews, not every Financial Analyst interview. Answers to the most asked questions are written and checked by an editor; a "common mistake" is shown only when reviews of real answers in these interviews show it, with the count.

98 interviews, 50 candidates, Sep 2025 to Oct 2026. Updated every month with new interviews.
