What should you focus on for a business analyst interview?
What makes these business analyst interviews different?
Requirements work stands out. Requirements gathering and business analysis appeared more often in these interviews than across interviews overall. So did stakeholder communication, process improvement, Agile and business cases. Most questions were mid-level: 59% had that rating. Use these checks to see whether you can explain how you would handle the work, as well as define the terms.
Can you turn a request into something developers can use?
Requirements gathering and documentation came up in 15 of 38 interviews. The most asked question was about turning a stakeholder request into a development-ready user story, asked in 3 of 38 interviews. Check whether you can explain the steps from the request to a story developers can use.
- Can you turn a stakeholder request into a user story with acceptance criteria?
- What would you ask to clear up an unclear requirement?
- Can you name the parts of an SRS and say what belongs in each?
- Can you explain what UML is and name the types of diagrams it includes?
Can you handle competing stakeholder needs?
Questions covered Agile team roles, priorities, client sign-off and difficult project situations. Check how you would handle a disagreement, not just whether you know the process names.
- What does a business analyst do within a SAFe Agile team?
- How would you decide what comes first when stakeholders say everything is urgent?
- How would you explain that decision to those stakeholders?
- How would you get client sign-off on requirements?
Can you explain systems and check data?
Technical questions covered APIs, SQL, spreadsheets, data quality and reporting. Testing and rollout questions also appeared. Use these checks to test both your technical knowledge and how you explain it.
- Can you explain HTTP status codes
200and400in a banking API? - Can you say which rows a SQL join keeps when there is no match?
- How would you check data quality before presenting a dashboard?
- Can you define a KPI and explain it to an executive?
- How would you test an API and plan for a rollback?
Can you support a business recommendation with evidence?
Business cases covered growth, churn, pricing, margins, costs and process improvement. What evidence would you need before recommending a price change or a way to reduce costs? Domain questions also tested industry rules. Can you explain consent requirements in Open Finance, or describe business rules for banking, insurance or rentals?

Can you walk me through how you would convert a stakeholder request into a development-ready user story?
Asked in 3 of 38 interviews · last asked Aug 5 · Scenario · Mid-level
Show answer
I would first clarify who needs it, what problem it solves, and what success looks like. Then I would write: “As a [user], I want [goal], so that [benefit].” I would add testable acceptance criteria, confirm scope and dependencies, and split large stories. Finally, I would review it with the stakeholder, developers, and testers before estimation.
- Understand the real need, not just the requested solution.
- Acceptance criteria should cover expected results and important exceptions.
- Keep the story small enough to complete within one sprint.
- Resolve open questions and confirm shared understanding before development.
What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you can turn an unclear request into a clear, testable story the team can build.
Other ways it was asked
- “Walk me through how you would convert a stakeholder request into development-ready user stories.”
- “How would you turn a stakeholder's needs into a user story?”
What sections should an SRS contain, and what information belongs in each?
Asked in 2 of 38 interviews · last asked Mar 27 · Concept · Junior
Show answer
My SRS starts with purpose, scope, definitions, and references. The overview describes users, system context, assumptions, dependencies, and constraints. Detailed requirements cover system behavior, business rules, data, and interfaces. Quality requirements set measurable performance, security, and usability targets; supporting sections link requirements to business needs and acceptance tests, with appendices where needed.
- Functional requirements state what the system must do, including error handling.
- Data requirements define fields, validation, relationships, and retention; interfaces define interactions with users and other systems.
- Give each requirement a unique ID and clear, testable acceptance criteria.
- Section names vary by template; separate required behavior from proposed design choices.
What the interviewer checks: The interviewer checks whether you can organize complete, clear requirements that developers and testers can use.
Other ways it was asked
- “What does your SRS document contain?”
- “What sections does a typical Software Requirements Specification (SRS) contain, and what information belongs in each?”
What is UML, and what types of diagrams does it include?
Asked in 2 of 38 interviews · last asked Sep 28 · Concept · Junior
Show answer
UML stands for Unified Modeling Language. It is a standard visual language for showing a system’s structure and behavior. UML 2.5.1 defines 14 diagram types: seven structural and seven behavioral. As a business analyst, I use diagrams such as use case, activity, and sequence to explain requirements and system interactions.
- Structural diagrams: class, object, component, composite structure, package, deployment, and profile.
- Behavioral diagrams: use case, activity, state machine, plus four interaction diagram types.
- Interaction diagrams: sequence, communication, interaction overview, and timing; these are a subset of behavioral diagrams.
What the interviewer checks: The interviewer checks whether you understand UML’s purpose, its main diagram groups, and its use in business analysis.
Other ways it was asked
- “Can you tell me about UML diagrams?”
- “How many types of diagrams are there in UML?”
What is the business analyst’s role within a SAFe Agile team?
Asked in 2 of 38 interviews · last asked Aug 5 · Concept · Mid-level
Show answer
I help the team turn business needs into clear user stories and acceptance criteria. I work with the Product Owner, stakeholders, developers, and testers to clarify requirements and check that solutions meet business needs. I also support backlog refinement and PI Planning by identifying gaps and dependencies.
- SAFe does not require a separate business analyst role; teams may share this work.
- Support the Product Owner, who remains responsible for team backlog priorities.
- Connect team requirements to business goals and clarify dependencies with other teams.
- Help define acceptance criteria and confirm that delivered work meets user needs.
What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you understand collaborative analysis work in SAFe and respect the Product Owner’s responsibilities.
How do you prioritize work when multiple stakeholders say everything is urgent?
Asked in 2 of 38 interviews · last asked Aug 5 · Scenario · Senior
Show answer
I prioritize by business impact, real deadlines, and the cost of delay, not by who asks loudest. I check dependencies and effort with the team, then agree on an order with stakeholders. If they cannot agree, I ask the accountable decision-maker to resolve the trade-off. I make clear what must wait and review priorities when facts change.
- Ask what happens if each request waits.
- Compare business value, risk, deadlines, dependencies, and effort.
- Use team capacity to show what can realistically be delivered.
- Make trade-offs visible and confirm who has final priority authority.
What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you can make clear trade-offs and handle competing requests without promising everything.
Other ways it was asked
- “How do you prioritize when everything feels urgent?”
- “How would you prioritize a backlog when multiple stakeholders say their work is urgent?”
How would you use AI and modern tools in business analysis and digitalization work?
Asked in 2 of 38 interviews · last asked Sep 10 · Tooling · Mid-level
Show answer
I would use AI to draft requirements, summarize approved meeting notes, and suggest test cases, then check the results with stakeholders. I would use data dashboards to find problems and workflow tools to automate repetitive tasks. I would start with a small pilot, protect sensitive data, and measure whether the change saves time or reduces errors.
- Start with a business problem, not a tool.
- Use approved tools and follow data privacy rules.
- Check AI output for errors, missing context, and bias.
- Keep human approval for important decisions and measure results against a baseline.
What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you can use modern tools safely to deliver measurable business value.
Other ways it was asked
- “How have you practically used AI in your business analysis workflow?”
- “How do you use AI and modern tools in business digitalization work?”
What do HTTP status codes 200 and 400 mean in a banking API?
Asked in 2 of 38 interviews · last asked Jul 17 · Concept · Mid-level
Show answer
HTTP 200 OK means the API request succeeded, but it does not always mean a payment is complete. I check the response body for the payment status. HTTP 400 Bad Request means the server cannot process the request because of a client error, such as invalid data. I read the error details and fix the request before retrying.
- A 200 response can show a payment is pending; check the payment status.
- A 400 response can indicate malformed JSON or invalid fields, depending on the API.
- Check the API documentation and error details; not all failures use 400.
What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you separate HTTP success from payment completion and know how to handle request errors.
Other ways it was asked
- “What do HTTP status codes 200 and 400 indicate in a banking API, and how should they be interpreted?”
- “What does the 400 Bad Request status code mean?”
What challenges commonly arise in a business analyst's day-to-day work on Azure projects, and how do you address them?
Asked once · last asked Mar 16 · Scenario · Mid-level
Show answer
Common challenges are unclear requirements, conflicting priorities, data access delays, and changing scope. I use workshops and clear acceptance criteria to agree on what is needed. I work with Azure engineers and security teams to resolve access and data issues. I track blockers and explain how changes affect cost, delivery dates, and business value.
- Agree on priorities with stakeholders and record decisions.
- Clarify data sources, data quality rules, and access needs early.
- Review Azure cost, security, and technical limits with specialists.
- Keep requirements and test cases aligned when scope changes.
What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you can handle daily delivery problems and connect business needs with Azure technical work.
What are some challenges a business analyst faces, and what strategies can they use to overcome them?
Asked once · last asked Mar 22 · Scenario
Show answer
Common challenges include unclear needs, conflicting priorities, changing scope, and limited access to users or data. I clarify needs with questions and examples, then confirm them with stakeholders. I help people agree on priorities using business goals. When changes arise, I assess their impact and get agreement before updating the plan.
- Confirm requirements early to avoid building the wrong solution.
- Resolve conflicting priorities by comparing business value, cost, and risk.
- Assess scope changes for effects on time, cost, and agreed outcomes.
- When access to users or data is limited, record assumptions and plan how to check them.
What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you can handle uncertainty, work with stakeholders, and manage changes without losing business value.
What is a Statement of Work (SOW)?
Asked once · last asked Feb 8 · Concept · Junior
Show answer
A Statement of Work (SOW) is a document that defines the work a supplier or project team agrees to do. It sets out the scope, deliverables, timeline, responsibilities, and acceptance criteria. It helps both sides agree on what is included and how completed work will be approved.
- Defines what is in scope and out of scope.
- Lists deliverables, deadlines, and who is responsible.
- Sets acceptance criteria so both sides know when work is complete.
- May form part of a contract and include payment terms.
What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you understand how an SOW sets clear expectations and boundaries for project work.
What is a stakeholder?
Asked once · last asked Aug 1 · Concept · Junior
Show answer
A stakeholder is a person or group that can affect, is affected by, or has an interest in a project or business decision. Stakeholders can be inside or outside the organisation, such as employees, customers, suppliers, or regulators. As a business analyst, I identify their needs and involve them in relevant decisions.
- Stakeholders can be internal or external.
- They may influence the work or be affected by its results.
- Their needs, influence, and interests may differ or conflict.
What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you recognise who matters to a project beyond the immediate team.
Other ways it was asked
- “What defines a stakeholder?”
How can a business analyst help improve efficiency in a company?
Asked once · last asked Aug 1 · Concept · Junior
Show answer
I help improve efficiency by finding where work slows down, gets repeated, or causes errors. I review data, map the process, and speak with the people doing the work to find the causes. I then recommend changes based on cost and value, test them, and compare results with the starting point.
- Use data and staff feedback to find problems and their causes.
- Consider simpler steps, clearer roles, or automation where it adds value.
- Prioritize changes by expected benefit, cost, and risk.
- Measure time, cost, and errors before and after changes without lowering quality.
CodeIf invoice approvals are slow, I check where invoices wait and why. If missing details cause delays, I suggest required fields on the submission form. I test the change with one team and compare approval time and error rates. What the interviewer checks: The interviewer wants to see whether you can find causes, suggest practical changes, and measure their impact.
Other ways it was asked
- “How does a business analyst identify inefficiencies and suggest specific improvements?”
How important is domain knowledge for a business analyst, and can you work effectively across unfamiliar domains?
Asked once · last asked Mar 22 · Concept
Show answer
Domain knowledge is important because it helps me understand business needs, rules, and risks. I can still work effectively in an unfamiliar domain by using my analysis skills and learning from domain experts. I would check my assumptions with them and allow time to learn, especially in regulated industries.
- Domain knowledge helps you ask better questions and spot missing requirements.
- Analysis, communication, and problem-solving skills transfer across domains.
- Use domain experts to learn key terms, processes, and rules.
- Unfamiliar or regulated domains may need more learning time and expert review.
What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you value domain knowledge while showing a practical way to work in unfamiliar areas.
Other ways it was asked
- “How important is it for a business analyst to know the domain?”
- “Can a business analyst be domain-agnostic?”
What is business analysis?
Asked once · last asked Aug 1 · Concept · Junior
Show answer
Business analysis is the work of understanding business needs and recommending solutions that create value. Its main purpose is to help an organization make changes that support its goals. I work with stakeholders to define problems, compare options, and agree on requirements and measures of success.
- Focus on the business need before choosing a solution.
- Solutions can involve processes, people, policies, or technology.
- Work with stakeholders to understand needs and agree on requirements.
- Define success in terms of business value, such as lower costs or better service.
What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you connect business needs, stakeholder input, and solutions to business value.
Other ways it was asked
- “What does business analysis aim to achieve, and what is its main purpose in an organization?”
What does a manual data export mean in a business process?
Asked once · last asked Oct 7 · Concept · Junior
Show answer
A manual data export means a person starts the process of copying data from a system into a file, such as a CSV or Excel file. They may choose the fields and filters, then download the file for reporting or sharing. Unlike a scheduled export, it needs someone to run it each time.
- A person starts the export, even if the system creates the file automatically.
- Manual exports take staff time and can lead to missed steps or wrong filters.
- Exported files can become outdated and must be stored and shared safely.
What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you understand the human steps, purpose, and risks of a manual export.
Does information need to be recorded in a system to make the process transparent?
Asked once · last asked Oct 7 · Scenario · Mid-level
Show answer
No, information does not have to be stored in an IT system to make a process transparent. Clear communication, paper records, or a shared task board can also work. Recording key steps and decisions helps people track progress, but they must be able to access and understand the information.
- Transparency means people can understand the process, its status, and who is responsible.
- A system supports transparency but does not guarantee it.
- Keep information current and accessible to the right people while protecting sensitive details.
What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you distinguish process transparency from simply storing information in a system.
What should you do when requirements are ambiguous?
Asked once · last asked Mar 10 · Scenario · Mid-level
Show answer
I ask the relevant stakeholders clear questions to understand the business need and resolve unclear points. I use examples or a simple sketch to check my understanding. I document the agreed requirements and acceptance criteria, then get confirmation before the affected work starts.
- Ask focused questions instead of guessing.
- Use examples to clarify expected results and exceptions.
- Record assumptions and open questions until stakeholders resolve them.
- Confirm requirements and clear acceptance criteria with the right decision-makers.
What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you can turn unclear needs into agreed, testable requirements without making hidden assumptions.
How can you make early client check-ins more efficient during requirements gathering?
Asked once · last asked Mar 10 · Scenario · Mid-level
Show answer
I make early client check-ins more efficient by sharing a short agenda and clear questions in advance. I focus on unclear needs, priorities, and decisions that could block progress. I confirm what we agreed, record open questions, and assign an owner and due date for each follow-up.
- Invite the people who can answer questions or make decisions.
- Share draft requirements or simple sketches before the meeting.
- Keep routine updates outside the meeting to leave time for discussion.
- Confirm decisions with the client to catch misunderstandings early.
What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you can use client time well while keeping requirements clear and agreed.
How do you gather the information and requirements needed for a BRD?
Asked once · last asked Jun 4 · Scenario · Mid-level
Show answer
I start by confirming the business problem, goals, scope, and key stakeholders. I review existing documents and processes, then use interviews, workshops, and observation to gather requirements. I clarify gaps, resolve conflicting needs, and agree on priorities. I document the requirements in the BRD and get stakeholder review and approval.
- Include decision-makers, process owners, and people who do the work.
- Ask about current problems, desired outcomes, business rules, and constraints.
- Separate business needs from proposed solutions.
- Make requirements clear and testable, and confirm agreement before approval.
What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you gather requirements from the right sources and confirm shared agreement.
What common mistakes should someone avoid, and what should they keep in mind, when preparing a BRD?
Asked once · last asked Jun 4 · Scenario · Mid-level
Show answer
When preparing a Business Requirements Document (BRD), I avoid unclear requirements, missing stakeholders, and jumping to technical solutions. I focus on the business need, scope, and measurable outcomes. I also record assumptions, limits, and dependencies, then review the document with stakeholders and agree on how changes will be approved.
- Define what is in scope and out of scope.
- Write clear requirements that can be checked, and link them to business goals.
- Include affected teams and resolve conflicting needs before approval.
- Confirm priorities, approval owners, and how requirement changes will be handled.
What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you can document agreed business needs clearly and prevent gaps or uncontrolled scope changes.

How this list is made
Every question here was asked by a real interviewer in a real job interview that a candidate ran MeetAssist in. After the call, the interviewer's questions are pulled from the transcript. Practice sessions, tests, exams and anything that was not a job interview are dropped.
Questions are rewritten so they make sense on their own: names of people, employers and clients are removed, and speech-to-text mistakes are fixed. Small talk, logistics and questions about one candidate's own résumé are left out. Rephrasings of the same question are merged, and the count is the number of different interviews it came up in.
The interviews come from candidates who use MeetAssist, so they lean towards software, data and AI roles: the shares describe these interviews, not every Business Analyst interview. Answers to the most asked questions are written and checked by an editor; a "common mistake" is shown only when reviews of real answers in these interviews show it, with the count.
38 interviews, 30 candidates, Jan 2026 to Oct 2026. Updated every month with new interviews.
