What should I focus on for a digital marketing interview?

What makes this role different?

Measurement, growth and paid ads stand out. These topics appeared more often in these digital marketing interviews than across all interviews. Content strategy, SEO and testing also appeared more often. Most questions were mid-level or senior-level. Check whether you can explain how you chose an audience, picked channels and measured the business result, not just which tools you used.

Can I explain how I measure success?

The most asked question was about choosing campaign metrics and changing them to fit the goal. It appeared in 8 of 143 interviews. Use a campaign you know to check your answer:

  • Can you state the goal and explain why your chosen metrics fit it?
  • Can you describe how you tracked results and checked the data for errors?
  • Can you explain the business result and how you measured it?

Analytics questions also cover reporting, forecasting and attribution: how you connect results to marketing activity. Can you explain that connection, rather than only list numbers from a dashboard?

Can I explain my channel choices?

Strategy questions cover market research, audience selection, product positioning and channel choices. Paid advertising questions add targeting, bidding, budgets and campaign problems. Check that you can answer these questions:

  • Who is the campaign for, and why did you choose those channels?
  • If a paid campaign needs improvement, what would you check about its targeting, bids, budget and ads?
  • How do you research keywords and connect them to what people want to find?
  • What is the difference between on-page and off-page SEO?

Keyword research and on-page versus off-page SEO are among the most asked questions on this page.

Can I walk through an AI workflow?

AI and automation questions appeared in 40 of 143 interviews. Common questions ask where AI is useful, where it is not, and how an automation workflow works.

Can you describe a workflow you built, the systems it connects, the challenges and the measured business impact? Check whether you can also explain how you test its outputs and keep it working reliably.

Can I explain how I work with others?

Project management questions cover planning, client accounts, resources, agencies and delivery under pressure. Use a project you know to check your answer. Can you explain how you set priorities, shared work across teams and handled changes? For an AI project, can you describe the collaboration, the challenges and the measured business results?

Counted by interview, not by mention: a question asked twice in one conversation counts once.

  1. Which metrics do you prioritize to measure campaign success, and how do they change with campaign goals?

    Asked in 8 of 143 interviews · last asked Sep 28 · Concept · Mid-level

    Show answer

I prioritize metrics that match the campaign goal. For awareness, I track reach and impressions; for traffic, clicks and click-through rate. For leads, I focus on qualified leads and cost per qualified lead; for sales, conversions, cost per acquisition, and return on ad spend. I compare results with targets set before launch.

    • Choose the main success metric based on the business goal.
    • Use conversion rate to understand how well traffic turns into leads or sales.
    • Check lead quality and profit, not just volume or revenue.
    • Set up conversion tracking and use consistent attribution rules when comparing results.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer wants to see whether you connect campaign metrics to business goals and define success clearly.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “Which metrics would you track to see whether the campaign is performing?”
    • “Which metrics would you define to evaluate a digital marketing campaign?”
    • “Which metrics or KPIs would you use to evaluate campaign performance and establish success?”
  2. How do you use AI in your marketing work, and where is it useful or not useful?

    Asked in 4 of 143 interviews · last asked Oct 24 · Tooling · Mid-level

    Show answer

I use AI to brainstorm ideas, draft ad copy, and summarize campaign reports. It helps with first drafts and repeated tasks, but I do not trust it alone for facts, brand voice, or budget decisions. I check its output, keep private customer data out of unapproved tools, and test new uses for time saved and campaign results.

    • Use AI for drafts and suggestions, not unchecked final work.
    • Verify facts and numbers, and review tone before publishing.
    • Protect customer data and follow company rules.
    • Test new tools on small tasks before adding them to regular work.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer wants practical uses, clear limits, and evidence that you judge AI by real value.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “How exactly do you use AI in marketing?”
    • “How do you use AI professionally in marketing, and how do you stay current as the market grows?”
    • “How do you use AI in your advertising work, if at all?”
  3. Walk me through an automation workflow you built, its architecture, the challenges, and its measurable business impact.

Asked in 4 of 143 interviews · last asked Aug 4 · Behavioral · Senior

    Show answer

I built [workflow] to solve [business problem]. [Trigger] sent data through [systems and steps]. I handled [real failure] with [fix] and tested it using [test]. [Metric] changed from [before] to [after] over [period], with [verified business impact].

    • Explain why this problem mattered and what you personally built.
    • Show how data moved from the trigger through each system.
    • Describe a real failure, your fix, and how you tested it.
    • Replace placeholders with verified results; distinguish faster assignment from faster follow-up or higher sales.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer wants to see clear ownership, reliable workflow design, practical problem-solving, and measured business value.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “Tell me about an n8n workflow you built that had the greatest business impact. What problem did it solve, what was your contribution, what metric changed, and what challenges required rebuilding it?”
    • “Which n8n workflow you built had the greatest business impact, and why did it matter more than the others?”
    • “What is one automation or decision system you have built, and how did its architecture support the business goals?”
  4. How do you conduct keyword research for an SEO project?

    Asked in 3 of 143 interviews · last asked Jun 26 · Scenario · Mid-level

    Show answer

I start with the business goals, audience, and what customers search for. I use keyword tools, competitor pages, and Search Console data, if available, to find ideas. I check search intent, search volume, ranking difficulty, and business value. Then I group related keywords and match them to existing pages or plan new content.

    • Check search results to understand intent and the type of content that ranks.
    • Treat tool estimates as guides, not exact traffic forecasts.
    • Prioritize relevant keywords with realistic ranking potential, not just high search volume.
    • Group keywords with the same intent so pages do not compete unnecessarily.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you can turn keyword data into a focused content plan that supports business goals.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “How do you conduct keyword research to plan content?”
    • “How do you approach keyword research for a new client or website?”
  5. What are on-page SEO and off-page SEO?

Asked in 3 of 143 interviews · last asked Feb 13 · Concept · Junior

    Show answer

On-page SEO means improving your own pages so search engines and people understand them better. It includes useful content, page titles, headings, and internal links. Off-page SEO means building your site's reputation through signals outside your website, such as links from trusted sites.

    • On-page SEO focuses on content relevance and page elements you control.
    • Off-page SEO focuses mainly on earning relevant, trusted backlinks, not just more links.
    • Technical SEO covers crawling, indexing, and site performance; it can overlap with on-page work.
    Code
On-page: Improve a running shoe guide's title, headings, and content.
Off-page: Earn a link to that guide from a respected running website.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you can separate page improvements from outside reputation signals and give clear examples.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “What is on-page SEO?”
    • “What do you know about on-page, off-page, and technical SEO?”
    • “Can you explain the difference between on-page and off-page SEO with an example?”
  6. Tell me about an AI marketing project you led, including collaboration, challenges, and measurable business results.

Asked in 3 of 143 interviews · last asked Jul 20 · Behavioral · Senior

    Show answer

I led [AI marketing project] to [goal]. I worked with [teams], addressing [challenge] through [action]. We compared results with [baseline or control]. Production time changed from [baseline] to [result], campaign costs changed by [amount], and conversion rate [rose/fell/stayed flat].

    • Use a real project and replace placeholders with measured results.
    • Explain what you owned and what each team contributed.
    • Describe the biggest failure, your fix, and any remaining limits.
    • Compare results with a baseline or control, including business impact rather than just AI usage.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you can lead practical AI work, manage problems, and show credible business results.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “Tell me about the highest-leverage AI workflow you have shipped: what problem did it solve, what did you build, and what changed as a result?”
    • “Tell me about a time you implemented AI in a marketing workflow or product. What did you build, what was the business outcome, and where did it fall short?”
    • “Tell me about an AI-powered marketing project you are proud of, including cross-functional collaboration, its biggest challenges, and how you measured success.”
  7. Tell me about a commercial impact you drove in a recent marketing role. What was the outcome, and how did you measure it?

Asked in 2 of 143 interviews · last asked Jul 27 · Behavioral · Senior

    Show answer

I led [project] to improve [sales or profit], and my main change was [specific action]. It delivered [measured business result] over [period], which helped us decide to [commercial decision]. I measured the result using [sales or CRM data], compared it with [baseline or comparison group], and accounted for campaign costs.

    • Explain the business goal and your own contribution.
    • Report sales, profit, or customer acquisition cost, not just clicks.
    • Name the data source, measurement period, and comparison used.
    • Be clear about what you can attribute to marketing and what other factors may explain.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you can connect your work to business results and support your claims with evidence.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “Tell me about a project you built or led that changed a commercial decision. How did you measure its impact?”
  8. What would you do to improve a website's SEO?

    Asked in 2 of 143 interviews · last asked Aug 17 · Scenario · Mid-level

    Show answer

I would check the website’s search performance, technical issues, content, and backlinks first. Then I would fix crawl and indexing problems, improve useful content and internal links, and make pages faster and mobile-friendly. For off-page SEO, I would earn relevant links through useful resources and outreach, not buy links. I would track organic traffic and conversions.

    • Use Search Console to find indexing issues and track search performance.
    • Match page content to search intent, with clear titles, headings, and internal links.
    • Earn links from relevant, trusted websites; avoid paid links meant to manipulate rankings.
    • Prioritize fixes by impact and track results over time.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you can plan practical SEO improvements and measure business results without risky shortcuts.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “How would you improve the website’s off-page SEO?”
  9. Is Ahrefs used only for SEO, or is it also used for marketing?

Asked in 2 of 143 interviews · last asked Jun 26 · Concept · Junior

    Show answer

Ahrefs is mainly an SEO tool, but it also supports wider marketing work. I can use it to research content ideas, study competitors, and find outreach opportunities. It can also support paid search research with keyword cost estimates and competitor ad data, but it does not run ad campaigns.

    • SEO uses include keyword research, backlink analysis, site audits, and rank tracking.
    • Content and outreach teams can use it to find topics and potential partners.
    • Paid search data helps with research, but coverage varies and estimates are not actual campaign results.
    • Ad platforms are still needed to launch and manage paid campaigns.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you understand Ahrefs beyond SEO and know its limits for paid marketing.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “What is Ahrefs used for, and can it support paid marketing as well as SEO?”
  10. What do you know about SEO?

Asked in 2 of 143 interviews · last asked Oct 16 · Concept · Junior

    Show answer

SEO means search engine optimization. It helps search engines find and understand a website so it can appear in relevant unpaid search results. It includes useful content, clear page structure, technical fixes, and earning links from trusted sites. I track organic traffic and conversions, not just rankings.

    • SEO covers on-page content, technical website health, and links from other sites.
    • Content should match what people are looking for and answer their questions clearly.
    • Pages must be indexed to appear in search results.
    • Results take time, and rankings are not guaranteed.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you understand SEO basics and how they support business goals.

  11. How do you use Canva or CapCut to enhance content for social media or digital marketing campaigns?

    Asked in 2 of 143 interviews · last asked Sep 19 · Tooling · Mid-level

    Show answer

I use Canva for branded graphics and CapCut for short videos, based on the campaign goal and platform. In Canva, I keep fonts, colors, and layouts consistent. In CapCut, I trim slow sections, add captions, and show the main message early. I test different versions and compare clicks or conversions, not just views.

    • Match image sizes and video formats to each platform and placement.
    • Check captions for errors and keep text easy to read on phones.
    • Use a clear call to action that supports the campaign goal.
    • Check music, image, and template licenses before using them in ads.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you connect design choices to campaign goals, platform needs, and measurable results.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “Which Canva or CapCut features are most effective for creating social media or digital campaign content?”
    • “How have you used design tools like Canva or CapCut in your marketing campaigns?”
    • “Can you describe a specific marketing campaign where Canva or CapCut enhanced the results?”
  12. What makes up Quality Score, and why is it important?

Asked in 2 of 143 interviews · last asked Oct 24 · Concept · Junior

    Show answer

Google Ads Quality Score is a 1–10 rating based on expected click-through rate, ad relevance, and landing page experience for Search keywords. It helps find weak spots that may affect ad performance. Better ad quality can support better positions and lower costs, but the score itself is not used in auctions.

    • Expected click-through rate estimates how likely someone is to click your ad.
    • Ad relevance measures how closely your ad matches the intent behind a search.
    • Landing page experience considers how useful, relevant, and easy to use your page is.
    • Improve weak components with closely related keywords, matching ad text, and useful landing pages.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer checks whether you know the three components and can use them to guide improvements.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “What is Quality Score, and how would you improve a low one?”
  13. How would you split a paid advertising budget between Google Ads and other channels?

Asked in 2 of 143 interviews · last asked Sep 17 · Case · Senior

    Show answer

I would split the budget based on our goal, where our audience spends time, and each channel’s results—not a fixed percentage. I would use Google Search to reach people already searching and test other channels for extra reach or demand. I would move budget toward profitable results and keep each ad group’s targeting, ads, and landing page aligned.

    • Use past results to guide the first split, and set aside money to test other channels.
    • Compare cost per qualified lead or customer, not just clicks.
    • Allow for conversion delays and different tracking methods before comparing channels.
    • Group ads by audience or search intent, with matching messages and landing pages.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer wants to see whether you can allocate spend using business results while keeping targeting and messages consistent.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “If PPC is a tool, how would you distribute the spend beyond Google Ads?”
    • “How would you distribute the spend beyond Google Ads, and how would you keep PPC campaigns and ad groups aligned with messages and targeting?”
    • “How would you decide how to split the US-market budget between Google Ads and other channels?”
  14. How do you keep up with changes to Google Ads?

Asked in 2 of 143 interviews · last asked Oct 24 · Tooling

    Show answer

I follow the official Google Ads blog, Help Center updates, and notices in my account. I use trusted industry newsletters to understand what changes may mean in practice. Before changing campaigns, I check whether an update applies to my accounts and test its impact where possible.

    • Use official Google sources to confirm changes and deadlines.
    • Check account notices for changes that need action.
    • Use industry sources for practical advice, not as the only source.
    • Test relevant changes and track results before using them more widely.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer wants to know whether you follow reliable sources and apply relevant changes carefully.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “How do you stay up to date with Google Ads changes?”
  15. What is the basic difference between Google Ads and Meta Ads?

Asked in 2 of 143 interviews · last asked Jul 16 · Concept · Junior

    Show answer

Google Ads often reaches people searching for a product or service, while Meta Ads often helps people discover products through Facebook and Instagram. Google also offers ads on YouTube and other websites, so it is not only search. I would choose based on the goal, audience, and where they are likely to respond.

    • Google Search ads can capture existing demand through search terms.
    • Meta Ads can build interest using audience signals and visual ads.
    • Both platforms support targeting, retargeting, and conversion tracking.
    • Neither is always cheaper or better; results depend on the campaign.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you understand search intent versus discovery without treating either platform as limited to one use.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “What are the differences between advertising on Meta and advertising on Google?”
  16. How do you work with keyword match types in Google Ads?

    Asked in 2 of 143 interviews · last asked Aug 17 · Tooling · Mid-level

    Show answer

I use broad, phrase, and exact match to control which searches can trigger ads. Broad covers related searches, phrase covers the keyword’s meaning, and exact covers the same meaning or intent. I use negative keywords to block unwanted searches; these are often called the fourth type. I review search terms and adjust targeting based on results.

    • There are three positive match types; negative keywords provide exclusions.
    • Exact match does not mean identical wording. Positive match types can include close variants.
    • Use broad match with Smart Bidding and reliable conversion tracking.
    • Negative keywords do not automatically exclude close variants, such as synonyms or singular and plural forms.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer checks whether you can balance reach, relevance, and wasted spend using match types.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “What are the four types of keyword match in Google Ads?”
  17. What do you know about Google Ads?

Asked in 2 of 143 interviews · last asked Sep 9 · Tooling · Junior

    Show answer

Google Ads is Google’s online advertising platform. It lets businesses reach people on Google Search, YouTube, and other sites and apps. I can choose campaign goals, audiences, budgets, and bids, then track results such as sales or leads. Search ads often charge per click, but payment models vary by campaign type.

    • Search keywords help match ads to relevant searches; negative keywords exclude unwanted searches.
    • Ad placement depends on bids, ad quality, and other auction factors, not just the highest bid.
    • Conversion tracking shows which ads lead to useful actions, such as purchases or enquiries.
    • Good results need relevant ads, useful landing pages, and regular testing.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer wants to know whether you understand how Google Ads works and how to measure business results.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “What are the basic things to know about Google Ads?”
  18. How would you link ad activity to offline redemptions when an insurer controls the redemption codes?

Asked in 2 of 143 interviews · last asked Jul 31 · Case · Senior

    Show answer

I would use a random reference ID that links the ad interaction to the insurer’s redemption record. The insurer can map this ID to its own code without changing the code format. The ID must survive the offline handoff, with consent and privacy safeguards. Without that mapping, I would use aggregate measurement rather than claim an exact match.

    • Agree with the insurer on how the reference ID reaches the offline redemption process.
    • The insurer keeps its code format and provides an approved mapping or matched report.
    • A random ID does not remove privacy risks; avoid sending health-linked redemption data to ad platforms.
    • A matched redemption shows a link, not proof that the ad caused it.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you can design a practical data link despite offline steps, insurer control, and privacy limits.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “What identifier could link an ad identity to a later redemption across an offline prescription gap?”
    • “What data or identifier can link an ad to a redeemed code across an offline prescription process?”
    • “If an insurer controls the format of redemption codes, can ad identity still be joined to code redemption offline?”
  19. How would you set up website conversion events using Google Analytics or Google Tag Manager?

    Asked in 2 of 143 interviews · last asked Sep 8 · Tooling · Mid-level

    Show answer

I would define the action to track and check whether an existing GA4 event already captures it. If not, I would create a GA4 event tag in Google Tag Manager with the right trigger and parameters. I would test it in GTM Preview and GA4 DebugView, then publish. In GA4, I would mark the event as a key event.

    • GA4 calls important conversion actions key events; mark existing events rather than tracking them twice.
    • Track confirmed success, such as a completed form submission, not just a button click.
    • For purchases, send value, currency, and a unique transaction ID.
    • Respect consent settings and avoid sending personal information, such as email addresses, to GA4.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer checks whether you can choose meaningful actions, configure tracking, and verify accurate data.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “How do you set up website conversion tracking using Google Tag Manager or Google Analytics?”
    • “If Google Analytics is already set up and events have been configured, how would you approach setting up additional conversions and events?”
  20. Where would you expect the biggest drop-off in a patient journey from awareness to prescription code redemption?

Asked in 2 of 143 interviews · last asked Aug 12 · Case · Senior

    Show answer

I would expect the biggest drop-off between sign-up and getting a valid prescription or insurance code. Patients may need a GP appointment, approval, or paperwork before they can continue. I would check each step’s conversion rate to confirm this, since the main barrier varies by product and healthcare system.

    • Map awareness, sign-up, GP visit, prescription or insurance approval, code receipt, and redemption.
    • Steps involving doctors or insurers add delays and are harder for marketing to control.
    • Code entry can cause further losses through unclear instructions or app problems.
    • Compare both the number of patients lost and the drop-off rate at each step.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer wants to see whether you understand healthcare barriers and can test your assumptions with funnel data.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “Map the patient journey from first awareness to entering a code in an app. Where would you expect the largest commercial drop-off, and why?”
    • “Where do you see the biggest friction in a healthcare funnel, especially around acquisition, sign-up, GP prescriptions, and insurance codes?”

  2. With one engineer for six weeks, how would you prioritize recovering 30% of potential revenue through matching changes, a Trustpilot-to-Braze validation pipeline potentially reducing churn by 2% but requiring custom Python and Claude API integration, and a commercially requested real-time budget simulator?

Give me a concrete example from the last six months when you had to choose between finishing something deep and doing something urgent but less important: what did you do, why, and what would you do differently now?”
  5. With two weeks before failures or escalation, how would you prioritize ML’s three-week rebuild request after matching-model retraining grew from four to 16 hours despite incremental lift, Product’s framework to prevent overlapping experiments, and Commercial’s AI-revenue dashboards, including what you would defer?

Asked once · last asked May 16 · Scenario

    Other ways it was asked
    • “Suppose it’s week three of Q3: the matching algorithm is delivering incremental lift, but ML says retraining now takes 16 hours instead of four and wants a three-week rebuild; Product wants an experimentation framework to prevent overlapping tests, and Commercial wants dashboards for AI-driven revenue impact. You have two weeks before things break or stakeholders escalate. How would you prioritize these requests—what would you do first, second, and third, and what would you not do?”
  6. If the ML team is blocked, what would you do to help: pair with them to diagnose the bottleneck, allocate budget for a contractor, or ask them to reprioritize their roadmap?

How this list is made

Every question here was asked by a real interviewer in a real job interview that a candidate ran MeetAssist in. After the call, the interviewer's questions are pulled from the transcript. Practice sessions, tests, exams and anything that was not a job interview are dropped.

Questions are rewritten so they make sense on their own: names of people, employers and clients are removed, and speech-to-text mistakes are fixed. Small talk, logistics and questions about one candidate's own résumé are left out. Rephrasings of the same question are merged, and the count is the number of different interviews it came up in.

The interviews come from candidates who use MeetAssist, so they lean towards software, data and AI roles: the shares describe these interviews, not every Digital Marketing interview. Answers to the most asked questions are written and checked by an editor; a "common mistake" is shown only when reviews of real answers in these interviews show it, with the count.

143 interviews, 75 candidates, Sep 2025 to Oct 2026. Updated every month with new interviews.
