  1. How does Power BI compare with Tableau, particularly for data modeling?

Asked in 4 of 48 interviews · last asked Sep 9 · Concept · Junior

    Show answer

Power BI focuses more on shared data models, while Tableau focuses more on flexible visual analysis. Power BI combines Power Query, table relationships, and DAX to build reusable semantic models. Tableau also supports relationships and joins, so it does not require one flat table. I would choose based on modeling needs, visual flexibility, and existing tools.

    • Power BI suits star schemas and shared measures, especially within a Microsoft environment.
    • DAX supports complex calculations, but learning filter context takes time.
    • Tableau offers flexible visual exploration and calculations, including level-of-detail expressions.
    • Both support data modeling; neither removes the need for clean data and well-designed relationships.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer checks whether you understand modeling differences and can explain trade-offs without dismissing either tool.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “What is the difference between Tableau and Power BI?”
    • “What is the difference between Power BI and Tableau?”
    • “What limitations do you see in Power BI compared with Tableau for data modeling?”
  2. What are the benefits of Power BI?

Asked in 4 of 48 interviews · last asked Sep 21 · Concept · Junior

    Show answer

Power BI is Microsoft’s tool for analyzing data and sharing interactive reports. It connects to many data sources and helps clean, combine, and visualize data. Power BI Desktop is used to build reports, while the Power BI service supports online sharing, scheduled refresh, and controlled access.

    • Interactive charts and filters help users explore data and track business results.
    • Power Query cleans and combines data; DAX supports calculations.
    • The Power BI service lets teams share reports and dashboards, with licensing requirements.
    • Mobile apps let users view reports on phones and tablets.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer wants to know whether you understand Power BI’s main tools and how they help a business.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “What are the major components and benefits of using Power BI?”
    • “Can you please explain the features of Power BI?”
    • “What is Power BI?”
  3. What is dynamic row-level security, and how do you set it up in Power BI?

    Asked in 4 of 48 interviews · last asked Sep 15 · Tooling · Mid-level

    Show answer

Dynamic row-level security (RLS) filters rows based on the signed-in user. I create a table mapping user sign-in names to allowed regions and connect it to the data through relationships. I define a role using USERPRINCIPALNAME() to filter that table. I test with “View as,” publish, and assign users or groups to the role in Power BI Service.

    • Static RLS uses fixed role filters; dynamic RLS uses user identity to decide access.
    • Store sign-in names that match USERPRINCIPALNAME() in the mapping table.
    • Ensure relationships carry the security filter from the mapping table to the fact table.
    • RLS restricts workspace Viewers, not Admins, Members, or Contributors.
    Code
Role filter on the UserAccess mapping table:
    UserAccess[UserUPN] = USERPRINCIPALNAME()

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer checks whether you can connect user identity, mapping tables, relationships, and role assignments to enforce data access.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “How do static and dynamic row-level security work in Power BI?”
    • “How would you set up dynamic row-level security in Power BI?”
    • “How would you implement dynamic row-level security in Power BI using a backend mapping table?”
  4. How would you enable self-service reporting with shared semantic models while keeping KPIs consistent and access controlled?

Asked in 4 of 48 interviews · last asked Oct 1 · Scenario · Senior

    Show answer

I would publish a shared semantic model with agreed KPI definitions and tested DAX measures. Teams would get Build permission to create thin reports that reuse the model. I would use row-level security and least-privilege access to protect data. A model owner would review KPI changes, with certification marking the trusted model.

    • Agree on revenue, AOV, and active customer definitions, including time periods, exclusions, and source mappings.
    • Check measures against trusted source totals and test how report filters affect results.
    • RLS applies to workspace Viewers, not Admins, Members, or Contributors; avoid edit roles for report consumers.
    • Certification signals trust, but does not prevent different local calculations; review reports for KPI consistency.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you can support independent reporting while keeping metric definitions reliable and data access secure.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “How do you validate and enforce consistent metric definitions in Power BI—for example, revenue, AOV, and active customer—across multiple reports and teams?”
    • “Several teams calculate the same KPI differently using data from multiple systems. How would you design a reusable dataset and Power BI semantic model so people can report consistently while still exploring the data themselves?”
    • “How would you make self-service data useful for teams building their own pipelines or Power BI reports without letting each team create a different version of the same KPI?”
  5. How would you diagnose and improve a slow Power BI report without changing its results?

    Asked in 4 of 48 interviews · last asked Sep 23 · Scenario · Mid-level

    Show answer

I first reproduce the slowdown and use Performance Analyzer to identify slow visuals and queries. I inspect expensive DAX queries with DAX Studio and check the model and data source. I optimize the measured bottleneck, not just rewrite code. I then compare speed and results using the same filters, selections, and security roles.

    • Separate visual rendering, DAX query, and data source delays before choosing a fix.
    • Use a clear star schema and remove unused columns without breaking report dependencies.
    • Simplify expensive DAX while preserving filter context, totals, and blank handling.
    • For DirectQuery, check generated source queries, query folding, and source performance.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer checks whether you can find the real bottleneck and improve speed without changing results.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “A client says the report is slow — how do you investigate and optimize it?”
    • “How would you rewrite a slow Power BI measure to improve its performance?”
    • “How do you improve the performance of a dataset or a Power BI dashboard?”
  6. What is DAX, and when would you use it in Power BI?

Asked in 3 of 48 interviews · last asked Sep 9 · Concept · Junior

    Show answer

DAX stands for Data Analysis Expressions. It is the formula language used in Power BI to create measures, calculated columns, and calculated tables. I use it for calculations such as total sales, profit margins, and year-to-date totals, especially when results need to respond to report filters.

    • Measures calculate results based on the current filters and selections.
    • Calculated columns store a result for each row; they do not change with report selections.
    • Common functions include SUM, DIVIDE, and CALCULATE, which changes the filter context.
    • Use Power Query to clean and reshape data; use DAX for calculations in the model.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer checks whether you understand what DAX does and when to use it instead of Power Query.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “What are some key functions of DAX in Power BI?”
    • “What is DAX in Power BI, and what is it used for?”
    • “What is DAX in Power BI?”
  7. How do row context and filter context differ in DAX, and how do they affect measures?

    Asked in 3 of 48 interviews · last asked Sep 4 · Concept · Mid-level

    Show answer

Row context identifies the current row in calculated columns and iterators like SUMX. Filter context limits the data through slicers, filters, and visual groups. Measures calculate results in filter context; row context alone does not filter their data. For percent of total revenue, the denominator must remove the relevant category filter while keeping any filters you need.

    • PivotTable rows create filter context for measures, not row context.
    • CALCULATE converts an existing row context into filter context.
    • Calling a model measure inside row context triggers this conversion automatically.
    • REMOVEFILTERS can clear a category filter without clearing date filters.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you can explain measure results and control which filters affect a total.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “Can you explain the difference between row context and filter context?”
    • “What is the difference between row context and filter context in DAX?”
    • “How do row context and filter context differ in DAX, and how does that difference affect a measure like percent of total revenue in a PivotTable?”
  8. How do you set up a data gateway in Power BI?

    Asked in 3 of 48 interviews · last asked Sep 15 · Tooling · Mid-level

    Show answer

Install the on-premises data gateway on an always-on Windows machine that can reach your data sources. Sign in with your work account, register the gateway, and save its recovery key. In Power BI Service, add connections with the source details and credentials. Map your semantic model to those connections, then test refresh or DirectQuery access.

    • Use standard mode for shared use; personal mode supports only your own Power BI import refreshes.
    • Connection details must match the sources used by the semantic model.
    • Grant the required users permission to use each gateway connection.
    • The gateway uses outbound connections; keep the machine running and the gateway updated.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer checks whether you can connect Power BI Service to private data sources and configure reliable access.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “How do data gateways work in Power BI, and how do you configure them?”
    • “How do you set up an on-premises data gateway in Power BI?”
  9. How do you use Power BI to transform, analyze, and visualize data?

    Asked in 2 of 48 interviews · last asked Apr 15 · Tooling · Mid-level

    Show answer

I use Power Query to connect to data, clean it, and reshape it. I build table relationships and use DAX measures to calculate KPIs. I create report visuals and slicers to explore results. I publish to Power BI Service to share reports and pin visuals to dashboards.

    • Power Query handles tasks such as changing data types, removing errors, and merging tables.
    • Relationships connect tables; DAX measures calculate results that respond to filters.
    • Charts show trends and comparisons; cards show key values.
    • Dashboards summarize results in Power BI Service; data transformation happens in Power Query, not on dashboards.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you understand the workflow from raw data to calculations, interactive reports, and shared dashboards.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “How can you use Power BI to analyze and visualize data?”
    • “How do you use a Power BI dashboard to manipulate data and create different figures and KPIs?”
  10. What is query folding, why is it useful, and how do you check whether it happens?

    Asked in 2 of 48 interviews · last asked Sep 15 · Concept · Mid-level

    Show answer

Query folding means Power Query sends supported transformation steps to the data source for processing. It can make refreshes faster by reducing data transfer and local processing. To check it, right-click a step and select View Native Query. You can also use folding indicators where available, or inspect queries received by the source.

    • Folding depends on the connector, data source, and transformation steps.
    • A query can fold fully, partly, or not at all.
    • Check later steps too; an unsupported step can stop further folding.
    • A disabled View Native Query option does not always mean folding has stopped.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer checks whether you understand where transformations run, why folding helps, and how to verify it.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “What is query folding?”
    • “What is query folding, and when is it useful?”
    • “How do you check whether query folding is happening?”
  11. What problems can many-to-many relationships cause in Power BI, and how would you handle them?

    Asked in 2 of 48 interviews · last asked Sep 15 · Concept · Mid-level

    Show answer

Many-to-many relationships can cause unexpected totals, unclear filter paths, and slower reports. I check what each row represents and use shared dimension tables with unique keys, or a bridge table, where possible. I keep filter directions simple and test totals, especially when the same item belongs to several groups.

    • Prefer shared dimensions with one-to-many relationships over directly linking two fact tables.
    • A bridge table stores valid links between entities, such as customers and accounts.
    • Use bidirectional filtering only when needed; it can create ambiguous filter paths.
    • Overlapping groups can count the same item more than once, so group totals may not add up.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer checks whether you understand how relationships affect filtering, totals, and model design.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “What can happen when a Power BI data model has a many-to-many relationship?”
    • “What can happen when both tables in a Power BI data model have a many-to-many relationship?”
    • “How do you handle a many-to-many relationship?”
  12. What is relationship cardinality in Power BI, and which cardinalities can you define?

    Asked in 2 of 48 interviews · last asked Sep 17 · Concept · Mid-level

    Show answer

Relationship cardinality describes whether values in the columns linking two tables are unique or can repeat. Power BI supports one-to-many (1:*), many-to-one (*:1), one-to-one (1:1), and many-to-many (*:*). The “one” side must contain unique values.

    • One-to-many and many-to-one describe the same relationship from opposite sides.
    • One-to-one requires unique values in both relationship columns.
    • Many-to-many allows repeated values in both relationship columns.
    • Cardinality and cross-filter direction are separate relationship settings.
    Code
    Customers[CustomerID]: C1, C2
    Sales[CustomerID]: C1, C1, C2
Customers → Sales is one-to-many: one customer can have many sales.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer checks whether you can choose a relationship type based on unique and repeated key values.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “What relationship cardinalities can you define in Power BI?”
    • “In Power BI data modeling, what does cardinality mean? Give an example.”
  13. What is a Power BI semantic model, and why would you share one across reports?

    Asked in 2 of 48 interviews · last asked Sep 17 · Concept · Mid-level

    Show answer

A Power BI semantic model is the data layer used by reports. It defines tables, relationships, measures, and security rules. Sharing one across reports keeps business calculations consistent and reduces repeated work. It is useful, but not required for every report.

    • Multiple reports can connect to the same model while using different visuals and layouts.
    • Shared measures give reports the same business definitions, such as how to calculate profit.
    • Central updates reduce maintenance, but changes can affect all connected reports.
    • Users need the right permissions, usually Build permission, to create reports from a shared model.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you understand the model’s role and the benefits and risks of reusing it.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “What are semantic models?”
    • “What is a shared semantic model, and why is it required?”
  14. How do ALL, ALLSELECTED, and REMOVEFILTERS differ, particularly when calculating percent-of-total measures?

Asked in 2 of 48 interviews · last asked Sep 4 · Concept · Senior

    Show answer

ALL and REMOVEFILTERS clear filters from specified tables or columns; ALL can also return a table. ALLSELECTED keeps external filters, such as slicers, while removing visual row and column filters. In percent-of-total measures, ALL or REMOVEFILTERS gives the total without those filters. ALLSELECTED gives the selected total.

    • Choose ALL or REMOVEFILTERS for share across all categories, ignoring category selections.
    • Choose ALLSELECTED for share across selected categories, keeping slicer selections.
    • Scope matters: clearing a category column does not clear filters on other columns, such as year.
    • REMOVEFILTERS only clears filters; it cannot return a table. Use DIVIDE to handle zero denominators.
    Code
    Total Sales = SUM('Sales'[Amount])

    % All Categories =
    DIVIDE([Total Sales], CALCULATE([Total Sales], ALL('Product'[Category])))

    % Selected Categories =
    DIVIDE([Total Sales], CALCULATE([Total Sales], ALLSELECTED('Product'[Category])))

    % All Categories Alternative =
    DIVIDE([Total Sales], CALCULATE([Total Sales], REMOVEFILTERS('Product'[Category])))

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer checks whether you can choose the right denominator and explain which filters it keeps.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “When building a percent-of-total measure, how would you use ALL versus ALLSELECTED in the denominator, and what business question does each answer?”
    • “What is the difference between ALL, ALLSELECTED, and REMOVEFILTERS in DAX?”
  15. What are calculation groups in Power BI, and how do they work?

Asked in 2 of 48 interviews · last asked Sep 15 · Concept · Senior

    Show answer

Calculation groups let you reuse calculation logic across many measures in Power BI. Each group contains calculation items, such as year-to-date or previous-year calculations. These items typically use SELECTEDMEASURE() to reference the measure being evaluated. A slicer or filter selects an item, which changes how that measure is calculated.

    • They reduce duplicate measures, especially for time comparisons.
    • They work with explicit DAX measures, not implicit aggregations such as dragging a column into a visual.
    • Calculation items can use dynamic format strings, such as showing percentages for growth calculations.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you understand reusable measure logic and how calculation items apply to measures.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “What are calculation groups?”
  16. When would you use a measure instead of a calculated column for a Power BI KPI?

    Asked in 2 of 48 interviews · last asked Sep 23 · Concept · Mid-level

    Show answer

I use a measure when a KPI must respond to slicers and report filters. For an on-time delivery rate, I divide on-time deliveries by total deliveries in the current filter context. I use a calculated column for a row-level value, such as an on-time flag.

    • Measures calculate results in the current filter context.
    • Calculated columns provide row-level values that can be used for grouping or slicers.
    • In Import mode, calculated columns are stored and recalculated during refresh, increasing model size.
    • For rates, calculate totals first, then divide; averaging group percentages can give incorrect results.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer checks whether you can choose between a dynamic KPI calculation and a stored row-level value.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “When building a dashboard in Power BI, how do you decide whether to use a calculated column or a measure for your analysis?”
    • “What is the difference between a Power BI measure and a calculated column for KPIs such as on-time delivery rates? Which would you use, and why?”
  17. How would you design a Power BI dashboard around business needs and assess its impact on decisions?

    Asked in 2 of 48 interviews · last asked Sep 16 · Tooling · Mid-level

    Show answer

I would first agree with users on the decisions they need to make, the KPIs, and the actions they can take. I would check data quality, choose clear visuals, and test the dashboard with users. I would assess its impact by tracking use, decision speed, and agreed business outcomes before and after launch.

    • Define the audience, business goals, KPI meanings, and data refresh needs.
    • Show key results clearly, with enough detail to explain problems and guide action.
    • Test with users and improve the design based on feedback.
    • Compare outcomes against a baseline; dashboard use alone does not prove business impact.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you connect business needs, dashboard design, and evidence of better decisions.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “Can you provide an example of how you’ve used Power BI to create dashboards that support business decision-making?”
    • “How have you used a Power BI dashboard to address customer needs, and what impact did it have?”
  18. Which Power BI visualizations would you choose to present analysis and support business decisions?

    Asked in 2 of 48 interviews · last asked Sep 6 · Tooling · Mid-level

    Show answer

I choose visuals based on the business question. I use bar charts to compare categories, line charts to show trends, and cards to highlight key numbers. I use KPI visuals to show progress against targets and tables or matrices for detail. Slicers let users focus on a period, region, or product.

    • Match each visual to a decision, not just the available data.
    • Show targets or past results so users can judge performance.
    • Use clear labels and consistent colors; avoid clutter.
    • Use maps when location matters, not just because geographic data exists.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer checks whether you can choose clear visuals that help users understand results and take action.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “What key features or visualizations would you include in a Power BI dashboard to support business decision-making?”
    • “What types of visuals did you create in Power BI to present your data analysis?”
  19. Can you explain bookmarks in Power BI?

Asked in 2 of 48 interviews · last asked Sep 9 · Tooling · Junior

    Show answer

Bookmarks in Power BI save a report view so you can return to it later. They can capture the current page, filters, slicers, sorting, and which visuals are visible. I use them with buttons to guide users through a report or switch between views.

    • Bookmark settings control whether data state, visual display, and the current page are saved.
    • Turn off the Data option when switching views should keep the user's current filters and slicers.
    • A bookmark can apply to all visuals or only selected visuals.
    • Report bookmarks are created by authors; personal bookmarks let readers save their own views.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you understand what bookmarks save and how to use them without resetting user selections unexpectedly.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “What is the bookmark function in Power BI?”
  20. How would you integrate ERP data, including SAP, into Power BI and design the end-to-end data flow?

Asked in 2 of 48 interviews · last asked Feb 24 · Behavioral · Senior

    Show answer

I choose a supported connector or extraction method for the ERP source, such as SAP BW, SAP HANA, or an approved API. I load data into staging, clean it, and build a star-schema Power BI model and reports. I normally use Import with scheduled refresh, plus a gateway for on-premises sources. I reconcile ERP totals and control access.

    • SAP BW and HANA connectors require those systems; they are not general SAP ERP application connectors.
    • Use DirectQuery only where supported and needed; report speed then depends on source performance.
    • Run extraction, transformation, and model refresh in order; monitor failures and use incremental loads where supported.
    • Check keys, currencies, and business rules; apply row-level security where users need different data access.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer checks whether you can design a reliable, secure data flow without overloading the ERP system.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “Tell me about a project where you integrated Power BI with an ERP system. How did you design the connection and data flows, and what was the outcome?”
    • “How do you integrate SAP ERP data into Power BI dashboards?”

How this list is made

Every question here was asked by a real interviewer in a real job interview that a candidate ran MeetAssist in. After the call, the interviewer's questions are pulled from the transcript. Practice sessions, tests, exams and anything that was not a job interview are dropped.

Questions are rewritten so they make sense on their own: names of people, employers and clients are removed, and speech-to-text mistakes are fixed. Small talk, logistics and questions about one candidate's own résumé are left out. Rephrasings of the same question are merged, and the count is the number of different interviews it came up in.

The interviews come from candidates who use MeetAssist, so they lean towards software, data and AI roles: the shares describe these interviews, not every Power BI interview. Answers to the most asked questions are written and checked by an editor; a "common mistake" is shown only when reviews of real answers in these interviews show it, with the count.

48 interviews, 27 candidates, Feb 2026 to Oct 2026. Updated every month with new interviews.
