  1. Can you explain boundary value analysis with a suitable example?

Asked in 4 of 245 interviews · last asked Oct 24 · Concept · Junior

    Show answer

Boundary value analysis is a test design technique that checks values at and just next to the limits of an input range. Errors often occur where accepted values change to rejected values. For a whole-number age field that accepts 18 to 60 inclusive, I would test 17, 18, 19, 59, 60, and 61.

    • Test both the lower and upper limits.
    • Check values just below, at, and just above each limit.
    • Equivalence partitioning groups inputs with similar expected behavior; boundary value analysis focuses on their edges.
    Code
Rule: Accept whole-number ages from 18 to 60 inclusive.
    17: Reject
    18, 19: Accept
    59, 60: Accept
    61: Reject
    Equivalence partitions: below 18, 18–60, above 60.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer checks whether you can identify boundaries, choose nearby test values, and state the expected results.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “What is boundary value analysis?”
    • “Can you explain boundary value analysis?”
    • “Can you give me an example of boundary value analysis and equivalence partitioning?”
  2. What is exploratory testing, and what guides it?

Asked in 4 of 245 interviews · last asked Oct 13 · Concept · Junior

    Show answer

Exploratory testing means learning about the software, designing tests, and running them at the same time. It is guided by test goals, product risks, tester experience, and what each test reveals. It is flexible, but not random, and helps find problems that scripted tests may miss.

    • Learning and test results guide what to test next.
    • A test charter can define the goal and scope of a session.
    • Testers record what they tested, what they found, and questions to follow up.
    • It complements scripted testing, especially for new or changed features.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer checks whether you understand that exploratory testing is guided investigation, not random clicking.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “What is exploratory testing?”
    • “What does the term exploratory testing mean?”
    • “What is exploratory testing, and when would you use it?”
  3. What is a test case?

Asked in 4 of 245 interviews · last asked Oct 1 · Concept · Junior

    Show answer

A test case is a set of conditions, inputs, steps, and expected results used to check a specific behavior of software. It usually includes an ID, a title, preconditions, test data, steps, and expected results. After running it, the tester records the actual result and whether it passed or failed.

    • Preconditions describe what must be ready before the test starts.
    • Steps and test data should be clear enough for another tester to follow.
    • Expected results define the correct behavior.
    • Compare actual results with expected results to decide whether the test passes or fails.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer checks whether you understand how to define a clear, repeatable test with a measurable result.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “Can you define a test case?”
    • “What is a test case, and what are its key components?”

More Manual Testing interview questions

How this list is made

Every question here was asked by a real interviewer in a real job interview that a candidate ran MeetAssist in. After the call, the interviewer's questions are pulled from the transcript. Practice sessions, tests, exams and anything that was not a job interview are dropped.

Questions are rewritten so they make sense on their own: names of people, employers and clients are removed, and speech-to-text mistakes are fixed. Small talk, logistics and questions about one candidate's own résumé are left out. Rephrasings of the same question are merged, and the count is the number of different interviews it came up in.

The interviews come from candidates who use MeetAssist, so they lean towards software, data and AI roles: the shares describe these interviews, not every Manual Testing interview. Answers to the most asked questions are written and checked by an editor; a "common mistake" is shown only when reviews of real answers in these interviews show it, with the count.

245 interviews, 143 candidates, Jan 2026 to Oct 2026. Updated every month with new interviews.
