  1. How do you write an actionable bug report and communicate it to engineering?

Asked in 5 of 245 interviews · last asked Oct 12 · Concept · Junior

    Show answer

I write a bug report with a clear title, environment and build, setup, exact steps, and expected versus actual results. I include impact, severity, how often it happens, and useful screenshots or logs. I send it to the responsible engineering team, flag urgent issues, and answer questions to help reproduce it.

    • Include test data and setup so another person can repeat the steps.
    • Describe expected and actual results clearly; attach evidence without exposing passwords or personal data.
    • Severity describes impact; agree on priority with the team based on urgency.
    • Check for duplicates, track the report, and retest the fix.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer checks whether you provide enough detail to reproduce the bug and help engineering act on it.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “What information should a well-written defect report include?”
    • “What makes a good bug report?”
    • “What fields should a good defect report include to help reproduce and fix the issue?”
  2. How do severity and priority differ, and can you give an example?

Asked in 4 of 245 interviews · last asked Oct 12 · Concept · Junior

    Show answer

Severity is how badly a bug affects the software or users. Priority is how urgently it needs fixing. For example, a crash in a rarely used game mode may have high severity but low priority, while a spelling error on the launch screen may have low severity but high priority before release.

    • Severity measures impact, such as crashes, data loss, or blocked tasks.
    • Priority reflects urgency, business needs, deadlines, and how many users are affected.
    • A severe bug is not always the first bug to fix.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer checks whether you can separate a bug’s impact from the urgency of fixing it.

    Other ways it was asked

More Manual Testing interview questions

How this list is made

Every question here was asked by a real interviewer in a real job interview that a candidate ran MeetAssist in. After the call, the interviewer's questions are pulled from the transcript. Practice sessions, tests, exams and anything that was not a job interview are dropped.

Questions are rewritten so they make sense on their own: names of people, employers and clients are removed, and speech-to-text mistakes are fixed. Small talk, logistics and questions about one candidate's own résumé are left out. Rephrasings of the same question are merged, and the count is the number of different interviews it came up in.

The interviews come from candidates who use MeetAssist, so they lean towards software, data and AI roles: the shares describe these interviews, not every Manual Testing interview. Answers to the most asked questions are written and checked by an editor; a "common mistake" is shown only when reviews of real answers in these interviews show it, with the count.

245 interviews, 143 candidates, Jan 2026 to Oct 2026. Updated every month with new interviews.
