How would you test a login page, including positive, negative, edge-case, and security scenarios?

Show answer
I would test successful login first, then failed login and access to protected pages without signing in. Next, I would check input limits, repeated attempts, and session handling against the requirements. With limited time, I would prioritize unauthorized access, password exposure, and failures that block valid users.
- Positive: Valid credentials open the correct account; logout ends the session and blocks protected pages.
- Negative: Wrong passwords, unknown users, empty fields, and disabled accounts fail without revealing whether an account exists.
- Edge cases: Check input length limits, spaces, case rules, repeated clicks, and expired sessions.
- Security: Check HTTPS, hidden passwords, login attempt limits, injection attempts, and passwords staying out of URLs and logs.
What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you cover normal use, failures, boundaries, and security while prioritizing risk and user impact.
Common mistake (in 3 of 9 reviewed answers): Many answers forget that time may be limited, so explain which tests you would run first and why.

How this list is made
Every question here was asked by a real interviewer in a real job interview that a candidate ran MeetAssist in. After the call, the interviewer's questions are pulled from the transcript. Practice sessions, tests, exams and anything that was not a job interview are dropped.
Questions are rewritten so they make sense on their own: names of people, employers and clients are removed, and speech-to-text mistakes are fixed. Small talk, logistics and questions about one candidate's own résumé are left out. Rephrasings of the same question are merged, and the count is the number of different interviews it came up in.
The interviews come from candidates who use MeetAssist, so they lean towards software, data and AI roles: the shares describe these interviews, not every Manual Testing interview. Answers to the most asked questions are written and checked by an editor; a "common mistake" is shown only when reviews of real answers in these interviews show it, with the count.
