What should you prepare for a Salesforce interview?
Which topics should I start with?
Integration and data migration came up in 19 of 38 interviews, more than any other topic. Cloud and business process questions came next, followed by security and sharing.
Start with these checks:
- Can you explain how you would connect HubSpot to Salesforce, choose an integration approach, and keep data consistent?
- Can you describe a migration plan that covers mapping, loading, cutover, validation, retries, and rollback with minimal downtime?
- Can you explain how profiles, roles, and organization-wide defaults affect access?
For migration, check each part of your answer. Does it cover validating the loaded data, retrying failed work, and rolling back, as well as mapping and loading?
How far beyond the basics should I go?
“What is Salesforce?” was the most asked question, appearing in 4 of 38 interviews. Check that you can answer it plainly and give examples of standard and custom objects.
But 49% of the questions were senior-level. Definitions alone do not cover the questions on this page. Can you explain how you would manage storage and performance for millions of Salesforce records? Your answer should address both storage and performance, not just one of them.
Also check whether you can explain object relationships and how you would use fields and formulas in a CRM data model.
What should I check about Flow and access?
Can you name the Flow types and explain when to use a record-triggered flow? Given a requirement, can you explain your choice between configuration, Flow, and custom Apex?
The automation questions also cover execution order, recursion, and bulk-safe automation. Check whether your answers cover these topics, not just which tool you would choose.
For access, can you explain how a manager can see subordinates’ records? Check that you can discuss record sharing separately from object and field permissions, and explain where profiles, permission sets, and roles fit.
Should I prepare to write code too?
Code-writing tasks appeared in 2 of 38 interviews. Try the tasks found in these interviews:
- Write a SOQL query to retrieve Contacts in Mumbai, ordered by last name.
- Write a simple Apex class.
Then check your spoken explanations. Can you explain triggers, governor limits, asynchronous processing, and transaction behavior? Apex and SOQL questions covered these topics as well as writing code.

What is Salesforce?
Asked in 4 of 38 interviews · last asked Oct 22 · Concept · Junior
Show answer
Salesforce is a cloud-based customer relationship management (CRM) platform. It helps businesses manage customers, sales, service, and marketing. Developers can customize it with objects and fields, automate work with Flow or Apex, build user interfaces with Lightning Web Components, and connect other systems through APIs.
- CRM keeps customer data and interactions in one place.
- Flow supports automation without code; Apex supports custom server-side logic.
- Lightning Web Components support custom user interfaces.
- APIs connect Salesforce with external systems.
What the interviewer checks: The interviewer checks whether you understand Salesforce’s business purpose and its main customization and development options.
Other ways it was asked
- “What is Salesforce, and what development work can be done on the platform?”
What are Salesforce objects, and can you give examples of standard and custom objects?
Asked in 3 of 38 interviews · last asked Oct 22 · Concept · Junior
Show answer
Salesforce objects store data, much like database tables. Fields are like columns, and records are like rows. The two main types are standard objects, provided by Salesforce, such as Account, Contact, and Opportunity, and custom objects, created for business needs, such as Invoice__c.
- Standard objects support common business tasks and come with Salesforce.
- Custom objects store data specific to a business.
- Custom object API names end in __c.
- Standard objects can also have custom fields.
What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you understand how Salesforce organizes data and can distinguish standard objects from custom objects.
Other ways it was asked
- “What is an object, and how many types of objects are there in Salesforce?”
- “What is an object in Salesforce, and what is it used for?”
- “What is an object in Salesforce?”
How do profiles, roles, and organization-wide defaults determine access in Salesforce?
Asked in 3 of 38 interviews · last asked Oct 22 · Concept · Junior
Show answer
Profiles set a user's base object and field permissions. Organization-wide defaults (OWD) set baseline access to records users do not own. Roles can extend record access through the role hierarchy, but do not grant object permissions. To give one user more access, use a permission set for permissions or record sharing for specific records.
- Record access still requires object permission; field permissions control which fields the user can see.
- Higher roles normally inherit record access from users below them.
- For custom objects, access through the role hierarchy can be disabled.
- Sharing rules and manual sharing can open record access beyond OWD.
What the interviewer checks: The interviewer checks whether you can separate object and field permissions from record access and choose the right access tool.
Other ways it was asked
- “What sets the baseline record access for all users in Salesforce?”
- “What sets the baseline record access for all users in Salesforce, and how does a profile differ from a role?”
- “What sets the baseline record access for all users in Salesforce, how does a profile differ from a role, and how would you grant one user additional access without editing their profile?”
How would you manage data storage and performance for millions of Salesforce records?
Asked in 3 of 38 interviews · last asked Oct 1 · Design · Senior
Show answer
I would plan storage around yearly growth and keep only active business data in Salesforce. I would archive older records or store them externally, based on access and reporting needs. For performance, I would use selective queries, indexed filters, and balanced record ownership. For migration, I would use Bulk API, load parents first, and reconcile results.
- Estimate record and file storage separately, and define retention rules before data grows.
- Use Query Plan to check queries; an indexed field alone does not guarantee a fast query.
- Avoid too many records under one parent or owner; this can increase locking and sharing costs.
- Use external IDs for migration upserts, preserve relationships, and plan how automation runs during loading.
What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you can balance storage cost, data access, query performance, and safe large-scale loading.
Other ways it was asked
- “What should you consider when designing a Salesforce data model for millions of Account, Contact, and Case records?”
- “What should you consider when designing a Salesforce data model for millions of Account, Contact, and Case records created annually?”
- “How would you migrate millions of records from a legacy CRM to Salesforce, and how would you model and store very large data volumes in Salesforce?”
How would you integrate HubSpot with Salesforce, choose an integration approach, and keep data consistent?
Asked in 3 of 38 interviews · last asked Sep 14 · Behavioral · Mid-level
Show answer
I would use the native HubSpot–Salesforce connector if it supports the required objects, fields, and sync rules. I would choose middleware or custom APIs for more complex workflows. Before syncing, I would define field mappings, record matching, and which system wins for each field. I would test conflicts, monitor failures, and compare records regularly to catch differences.
- Check connector limits, sync direction, timing needs, API limits, and cost before choosing an approach.
- Use stored record IDs after matching; define duplicate rules rather than relying only on email.
- Set field-level ownership and conflict rules, including how blank values and deletions are handled.
- Test in a safe environment, retry failures without creating duplicates, and alert on unresolved sync errors.
What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you can choose a practical integration and prevent duplicates, conflicting updates, and silent failures.
Other ways it was asked
- “Tell me about a complex challenge you faced integrating HubSpot with another tool, such as Salesforce. What steps did you take to ensure data consistency?”
- “How would you integrate HubSpot Marketing Hub with Salesforce Sales Cloud?”
- “When you integrated Salesforce with HubSpot, what mechanism moved the data—native connector, middleware, or API—and how did you handle conflicts when the same field changed in both systems?”
How would you plan Salesforce data migration, including mapping, loading, cutover, validation, retries, and rollback with minimal downtime?
Asked in 3 of 38 interviews · last asked Oct 1 · Scenario · Senior
Show answer
I would map fields and legacy IDs, clean the data, and test the migration in a sandbox. I would bulk-load Accounts before Contacts, using unique External IDs to preserve links and upsert safely. I would preload data, briefly pause writes, load final changes, and validate before switching users. I would retry failed rows and use tested backups for rollback.
- Use Bulk API for large loads; plan how validation rules, flows, and triggers will behave.
- Validate record counts, key totals, Account–Contact links, and business workflows before approving cutover.
- Log results, fix errors, and retry only failed rows with the same External IDs.
- Test rollback: delete inserted records, restore changed records, and reconcile writes made after cutover.
What the interviewer checks: The interviewer checks whether you can preserve data and relationships while controlling downtime, duplicate risks, and recovery.
Other ways it was asked
- “How would you migrate data with minimal downtime and reliable rollback? Briefly explain your step-by-step approach, including how you would load records, preserve Account–Contact relationships, and safely retry failed rows without creating duplicates.”
- “How would you plan data mapping, cutover, and rollback for migrating a heavily customized legacy CRM to Salesforce with minimal downtime?”
- “When you need to perform a large Salesforce data cleanup or migration, how do you plan the import/update tool choice, mapping strategy, validation, and rollback plan to minimize business disruption?”
How can a manager access their subordinates' records in Salesforce?
Asked in 2 of 38 interviews · last asked Oct 22 · Tooling · Junior
Show answer
A manager can access subordinates’ records through the Salesforce role hierarchy. Place the manager’s role above their subordinates’ roles so record access flows upward. The manager still needs Read permission on the object, and field permissions control which fields they can see.
- The Manager field on a user record does not grant record access.
- Hierarchy access is automatic for standard objects; custom objects require Grant Access Using Hierarchies to be enabled.
- Sharing rules or manual sharing can grant access when users are not in the same role branch.
- For saved reports, managers also need report folder access; visible data depends on their record access.
What the interviewer checks: The interviewer checks whether you understand role hierarchy access and how it differs from object permissions and report sharing.
Other ways it was asked
- “How can managers see their subordinates' records in Salesforce?”
- “How can a manager access reports created by their subordinates in Salesforce?”
What types of flows are available in Salesforce?
Asked in 2 of 38 interviews · last asked Jul 13 · Concept · Junior
Show answer
The main types are Screen Flow, Record-Triggered Flow, Schedule-Triggered Flow, Platform Event-Triggered Flow, and Autolaunched Flow (No Trigger). Screen flows show screens for user input. An autolaunched flow has no screens and can be started by another flow, Apex, or an API.
- Record-triggered flows run when records are created, updated, or deleted.
- Schedule-triggered flows run at a set time, once or on a recurring schedule.
- Platform event-triggered flows run when they receive a platform event message.
- Autolaunched Flow (No Trigger) has no trigger of its own; another process must start it.
What the interviewer checks: The interviewer checks whether you can choose a flow type based on user interaction and what starts it.
Other ways it was asked
- “What types of Salesforce flows are available, and what is an autolaunched flow?”
When do we use a record-triggered flow?
Asked in 2 of 38 interviews · last asked Jul 13 · Concept · Junior
Show answer
We use a record-triggered flow to run automation when a Salesforce record is created, updated, or deleted. Use a before-save flow to update fields on the triggering record. Use an after-save flow for related records or actions such as sending an email. Delete-triggered flows run before deletion.
- Set entry conditions so the flow runs only for relevant records.
- Before-save flows update the triggering record without a separate Update Records step.
- After-save flows can update related records and perform other actions.
- Use scheduled paths for delayed work in supported after-save flows.
What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you can choose the right trigger and timing for record-based automation.
Other ways it was asked
- “What are record-triggered flows in Salesforce?”
How do you decide between Salesforce configuration, Flow, and custom Apex code for a requirement?
Asked in 2 of 38 interviews · last asked Oct 1 · Concept · Mid-level
Show answer
I choose the simplest option that meets the requirement and is easy to maintain. I use standard configuration for built-in features and Flow for automation it can handle clearly. I use Apex when complexity, performance, or unsupported features require code. I check data volume, platform limits, existing automation, and who will maintain it.
- Start with standard features, such as validation rules, before building automation.
- Flow suits many business processes, but complex flows can become hard to maintain.
- Apex offers more control, but needs coding skills and automated tests.
- Flow and Apex both face governor limits; Flow can call Apex for specific tasks.
What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you balance platform features, technical limits, and long-term maintenance rather than always choosing one tool.
Other ways it was asked
- “How do you decide when to use Salesforce Flow versus Apex for a new business process?”
- “How do you decide whether to meet a requirement with Salesforce configuration or custom code?”
What is the difference between a class and an interface in Apex, and when would you choose an interface instead of an abstract class?
Asked in 2 of 38 interviews · last asked Sep 17 · Concept · Mid-level
Show answer
A class defines data and method logic; an interface defines method signatures that implementing classes must provide. An abstract class can share fields and method logic, but cannot be instantiated directly. I choose an interface when different classes need the same contract without shared code, especially when they already extend another class.
- An Apex class can implement multiple interfaces but extend only one class.
- Interface methods have no bodies; a concrete implementing class must provide their implementations.
- Choose an abstract class when related classes should share state or method logic.
What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you understand contracts, shared implementation, and Apex inheritance limits.
Other ways it was asked
- “What is the difference between a class and an interface in Apex?”
How do you prevent Apex trigger recursion without Boolean flags while allowing legitimate re-entry in bulk transactions?
Asked in 2 of 38 interviews · last asked Sep 17 · Scenario · Senior
Show answer
I prefer field-change checks and idempotent updates: update a record only when its values need to change. If a recursion guard is still needed, I use a static set keyed by record ID, trigger operation, and handler. I add keys before recursive work and remove them in a finally block, allowing later re-entry.
- Compare relevant old and new values, and collect required updates for bulk DML outside loops.
- A transaction-wide set of processed IDs can wrongly skip legitimate changes to the same record.
- Meaningful changes during guarded work must be processed or deferred, not silently skipped.
- Define “once” per logical action, not once for the whole trigger or transaction.
What the interviewer checks: The interviewer checks whether you can stop recursive loops without losing valid work during bulk processing or re-entry.
Other ways it was asked
- “If a Salesforce trigger updates related records and fires recursively, what can you use instead of a Boolean flag to prevent recursion?”
- “In a bulkified scenario, how do you avoid recursion and ensure logic runs only once per transaction without breaking legitimate re-entry cases? Explain your preferred pattern.”
How do you troubleshoot and bulkify Apex code to avoid governor limits when processing large data volumes?
Asked in 2 of 38 interviews · last asked Sep 18 · Scenario · Senior
Show answer
I use debug logs and Limits methods to find the failing limit and expensive operations. I collect IDs in sets, query related records together, and use maps for lookups. I move SOQL and DML outside loops and test bulk cases. For larger jobs, I use Batch Apex with suitable batch sizes.
- Check query counts, DML counts, queried rows, CPU time, and heap usage.
- Triggers and other automation share transaction limits, so check repeated updates and recursion.
- Test with 200 records and realistic related data, not just one record.
- Each Batch Apex execute call gets fresh limits, but its code must still be bulk-safe.
What the interviewer checks: The interviewer checks whether you can find the real bottleneck and redesign processing for many records safely.
Other ways it was asked
- “How do you avoid hitting governor limits when processing large data volumes in Apex?”
- “An Apex trigger works for individual records but fails with governor limits during a bulk import. How would you investigate and redesign it?”
What is a trigger in Salesforce?
Asked in 2 of 38 interviews · last asked Jun 20 · Concept · Junior
Show answer
A trigger in Salesforce is Apex code that runs automatically before or after a record event. It supports insert, update, delete, and undelete events. Before triggers can validate or change records being saved; after triggers can update related records and use values set by Salesforce, such as new record IDs.
- Insert, update, and delete support both before and after triggers; undelete supports only after triggers.
- Records that fire an after trigger are read-only within that trigger.
- Triggers must handle multiple records at once and stay within governor limits.
What the interviewer checks: The interviewer checks whether you understand trigger events, execution timing, and basic limits.
Other ways it was asked
- “What types of triggers are available in Salesforce?”
- “What are the trigger events in Salesforce?”
What are Lightning Web Components (LWC)?
Asked in 2 of 38 interviews · last asked Sep 28 · Concept · Junior
Show answer
Lightning Web Components (LWC) are reusable user interface components built with Salesforce’s framework using HTML, JavaScript, and CSS. They use modern web standards and can connect to Salesforce data. I would use them to build custom forms, dashboards, or other interactive features in Salesforce.
- LWC is the preferred choice for new Salesforce user interface development where supported.
- Components can access Salesforce data through Lightning Data Service or Apex.
- LWC and Aura components can work together, but LWC cannot contain Aura components.
What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you understand what LWC is and when to use it.
Other ways it was asked
- “What are Lightning Web Components (LWC), and when would you use them?”
- “What is Lightning Web Components (LWC)?”
How do you prevent duplicate records when Salesforce integration requests time out, retry, or arrive concurrently?
Asked in 2 of 38 interviews · last asked Sep 18 · Scenario · Senior
Show answer
I use a stable idempotency key for each order and enforce uniqueness in the receiving system. Every retry sends the same key. The receiver atomically saves the key and order, so concurrent requests cannot create duplicates. If the first request succeeded but timed out, a retry returns the saved result.
- Use a database unique constraint; checking for an existing record before inserting is not enough.
- Save the key, order, and result in one transaction where possible.
- For requests still processing, wait or return a retryable response instead of creating another order.
- When writing to Salesforce, upsert using an External ID field also marked Unique.
What the interviewer checks: The interviewer checks whether your design prevents duplicates after uncertain outcomes and during concurrent requests.
Other ways it was asked
- “When Salesforce sends a record to an external system, how would you prevent that system from creating the same record more than once if the first request succeeded but Salesforce timed out and retried it?”
- “What would you do if a Salesforce integration creates duplicate orders when requests are retried after a timeout, including when identical requests arrive concurrently?”
What are Salesforce sObjects, and how are they used to represent CRM data?
Asked once · last asked Sep 10 · Concept · Mid-level
Show answer
An sObject is an Apex data type that represents a Salesforce record. Standard types, such as Account and Contact, and custom types, such as Invoice__c, define its fields and relationships. In Apex, we use sObjects to hold CRM data returned by queries and to create, update, or delete records.
- An sObject type defines the structure; an sObject instance holds one record’s data.
- Standard objects are built in; custom objects store data specific to a business.
- Fields hold values, while relationship fields link records.
- Changing an sObject in memory does not save it; DML operations save record changes.
What the interviewer checks: The interviewer checks whether you understand how Salesforce records, fields, and relationships are represented and used in Apex.
How would you redesign a CRM data model for forecasting or pipeline reporting, choosing between custom objects and fields and between lookup and master-detail relationships?
Asked once · last asked Sep 14 · Behavioral · Senior
Show answer
I would keep deals on Opportunity and design around the forecast and reporting needs. I would add fields for deal attributes and custom objects for separate records, such as monthly targets. I would use lookup for independent records. I would use master-detail when child records should inherit parent access and be deleted with the parent.
- Define what each record represents, reporting dates, and how totals avoid double-counting.
- Check that the chosen data supports Salesforce forecasting features before moving data into custom objects.
- Master-detail requires a parent and supports native roll-up summaries; lookup allows separate ownership.
- Preserve historical snapshots when reports must show how the pipeline changed over time.
What the interviewer checks: The interviewer checks whether you can turn reporting needs into a model with correct totals, access, and record lifecycles.
Other ways it was asked
- “Describe a time you redesigned a CRM data model for forecasting or pipeline reporting. How did you choose between custom objects and fields, and between lookup and master-detail relationships?”
Why does Salesforce use a multitenant architecture?
Asked once · last asked Oct 22 · Concept · Mid-level
Show answer
Salesforce uses a multitenant architecture so many customers can share infrastructure while keeping their data separate. This lowers costs and lets Salesforce manage maintenance and upgrades centrally. Governor limits help stop one customer’s workload from using too many shared resources.
- Shared infrastructure reduces costs and simplifies maintenance.
- Customer data stays logically separate, even though infrastructure is shared.
- Central upgrades deliver platform improvements without each customer managing an installation.
- Governor limits protect shared resources, so applications must work within those limits.
What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you understand shared infrastructure, data separation, and why Salesforce enforces resource limits.
What is a formula field in Salesforce?
Asked once · last asked Jun 20 · Concept · Junior
Show answer
A formula field in Salesforce is a read-only field that calculates its value using a formula you define. It can use values from the same record or related parent records. Salesforce calculates the value when the field is accessed, rather than storing it as an editable value.
- Users cannot edit a formula field’s value directly.
- Formulas can return values such as text, numbers, dates, or checkboxes.
- Cross-object formulas can reference fields on related parent records.
- Use a roll-up summary field, not a formula field, to summarize child records.
What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you understand calculated fields and how they differ from stored, editable fields.

How this list is made
Every question here was asked by a real interviewer in a real job interview that a candidate ran MeetAssist in. After the call, the interviewer's questions are pulled from the transcript. Practice sessions, tests, exams and anything that was not a job interview are dropped.
Questions are rewritten so they make sense on their own: names of people, employers and clients are removed, and speech-to-text mistakes are fixed. Small talk, logistics and questions about one candidate's own résumé are left out. Rephrasings of the same question are merged, and the count is the number of different interviews it came up in.
The interviews come from candidates who use MeetAssist, so they lean towards software, data and AI roles: the shares describe these interviews, not every Salesforce interview. Answers to the most asked questions are written and checked by an editor; a "common mistake" is shown only when reviews of real answers in these interviews show it, with the count.
38 interviews, 20 candidates, Feb 2026 to Oct 2026. Updated every month with new interviews.
