What should I focus on for an MLOps interview?

Which topics should I start with?

Start with the path from a trained model to a reliable production service. Fundamentals appeared in 32 of 124 interviews, monitoring and drift in 23 of 124 interviews, and production troubleshooting in 19 of 124 interviews. Use these topics to check whether you can explain what happens beyond training.

  • How would you move a pilot into production?
  • How would you connect model quality to business impact?
  • Who would own deployment, monitoring, and incident response?

Can I explain how I would release a model?

Taking a trained model into production and handling production challenges were the most asked questions in these interviews. Check whether you can explain the release process, including quality checks and monitoring, rather than only name tools.

  • Would you use batch or real-time serving, and how would the application use the model?
  • Which evaluation metrics and decision thresholds would you check before release?
  • How would you check calibration?
  • What would you test in CI/CD, and what would trigger a rollback?

Can I investigate a model that gets worse after launch?

Questions covered models that perform well offline but poorly in production. They also asked how to keep models reliable as data or user behavior changes. Can you explain what you would investigate, not just say that you would retrain?

  • How would you distinguish data drift, concept drift, and a temporary data issue?
  • What would you monitor when labels arrive late?
  • What would trigger an alert, retraining, a fallback, or rollback?
  • How would you investigate a drop in a business metric?

Can I reproduce a run and explain serving costs?

Data pipeline questions cover versioning and reproducibility. Serving questions cover latency, throughput, hardware, and cost. Check whether you can explain both how to reproduce a model run and how to investigate its performance in production.

  • What code, data, and workflow artifacts would you version?
  • How would you keep training and serving features consistent?
  • How would you profile latency and throughput?
  • When would you consider compression, quantization, or different hardware?

How deep should my answers go?

Senior-level questions made up 69% of the questions. Test your answer against the production decisions covered here: can you explain cloud versus edge deployment, hardware needs, and availability? For an LLM system, can you describe the agent release workflow and how you would investigate hallucinations or worsening RAG results?

    • Use the same preprocessing in training and production, and validate incoming data.
    • Compare against the current baseline, including performance across important user groups.
    • Set release criteria and alerts, and keep the previous version ready for rollback.
    • Drift does not always mean worse predictions; investigate before retraining, and validate replacement models.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you can deliver a reliable model service and maintain its quality after release.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “How would you take a machine learning model from development through production deployment?”
    • “How would you take a data science model from development to production?”
    • “How would you deploy a machine learning model to production?”
  2. What challenges arise when moving AI models into production, and how would you address them?

Asked in 7 of 124 interviews · last asked Oct 7 · Scenario · Senior

    Show answer

The main challenges are unreliable data, training and serving differences, slow predictions, and falling model quality. I would validate data, reuse feature logic, and version data, code, and models. I would test on realistic data and load, then deploy gradually with a rollback plan. In production, I would monitor service health and model quality.

    • Use representative test data and prevent data leakage to avoid misleading quality estimates.
    • Measure latency, memory, and cost; simplify or compress models only after checking accuracy.
    • Automate testing and deployment, and keep dependencies consistent across environments.
    • Monitor data drift and outcomes; investigate quality drops before deciding to retrain.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer checks whether you can connect production risks to practical tests, deployment controls, and ongoing monitoring.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “What are the main operational or mathematical bottlenecks when taking a model from research to production, and how would you mitigate them?”
    • “What are the biggest operational or mathematical bottlenecks when moving a data science model from research to production, and how would you mitigate them?”
    • “What operational or mathematical bottlenecks can arise when moving a machine learning model from research to production, and how would you mitigate them?”
  3. How would you keep a deployed model reliable when data distributions or user behavior change?

Asked in 6 of 124 interviews · last asked Sep 14 · Scenario · Senior

    Show answer

I would monitor input data, prediction patterns, and model quality using fresh labels when available. I would set alerts and route risky cases to a safe baseline or human review. If quality drops, I would investigate, retrain on recent representative data, and test the update before a gradual rollout.

    • Data drift is a warning, not proof that model quality has dropped.
    • Track quality for key user groups; overall averages can hide failures.
    • Use clear thresholds for alerts, fallback behavior, and rollback.
    • Validate retrained models before release; an older model may also fail on changed data.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer checks whether you can detect changes, verify their impact, and adapt without harming users.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “If data patterns or human behavior shift after deployment, how would you adapt the system or make it degrade gracefully?”
    • “If underlying data patterns or human behaviors shift post deployment, how will your system adapt or gracefully degrade?”
    • “How should a deployed predictive system adapt or gracefully degrade when data patterns or human behaviors shift?”
  4. Why might a model perform well offline but poorly in production, and how would you investigate?

    Asked in 5 of 124 interviews · last asked Sep 23 · Scenario · Mid-level

    Show answer

Good offline results may hide data leakage, overfitting, or a test set that does not match production. Production data may change, or serving may use different preprocessing. I would verify labels and metrics, compare data distributions, and replay production inputs through both pipelines. Then I would fix pipeline differences or retrain and test on representative data.

    • Check for leakage and use splits that reflect deployment, such as time-based or user-based splits.
    • Compare training and serving features, preprocessing, model versions, and class mappings.
    • Measure performance on labeled production data, including important groups, rather than only overall accuracy.
    • Look for changes in inputs or their relationship to labels; retraining alone cannot fix serving bugs.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer checks whether you can separate evaluation flaws, data changes, and serving bugs through a clear investigation.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “Why can model accuracy drop after deployment?”
    • “Why will the model’s accuracy drop after deployment?”
    • “Suppose you're building a simple cats-and-dogs classification problem and achieve 90% accuracy on your local pipeline, but accuracy drops to 65% when the model sees real production data. What might be causing this, and how would you address it?”
  5. What production model metrics would you monitor, and what would trigger alerts, retraining, or rollback?

Asked in 4 of 124 interviews · last asked Sep 26 · Concept · Senior

    Show answer

I monitor data quality, drift, prediction quality, calibration, latency, and service errors. I alert when agreed limits are breached for a sustained period, or immediately for severe failures. Drift prompts investigation; confirmed quality loss can trigger retraining, followed by validation. I roll back a harmful release to a known good version.

    • Choose task metrics, such as precision, recall, or prediction error; track business outcomes and important user groups.
    • Use actual outcomes to measure quality and calibration; when labels arrive late, drift is only an early warning.
    • Set thresholds against a validated baseline and service targets, including tail latency, error rate, and missing inputs.
    • Retraining needs suitable fresh data and validation; drift alone does not justify replacing the model.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer checks whether you connect monitoring signals to clear, safe actions rather than just listing metrics.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “Once a model is in production, what monitoring do you set up for data drift, performance, calibration, and latency, and what thresholds or triggers cause you to retrain or roll back?”
    • “How would you implement model monitoring to detect data drift and performance degradation in production, and what metrics would you alert on?”
    • “How would you monitor and evaluate a machine learning model deployed on Google Cloud or in a production environment?”
  6. What are the stages of the machine learning lifecycle, and how would you manage them?

    Asked in 3 of 124 interviews · last asked Sep 14 · Concept · Mid-level

    Show answer

The stages are problem definition, data collection and preparation, model training, evaluation, deployment, monitoring, and retraining or retirement. I would manage them with clear goals, versioned data and code, tracked experiments, and automated testing and deployment pipelines. I would use approval checks before release and monitoring results to guide updates.

    • Define business goals, success metrics, and a simple baseline before training.
    • Check data quality and prevent leakage between training and evaluation data.
    • Version models, code, and data so results can be reproduced.
    • Monitor prediction quality, data drift, latency, and cost; validate updates and keep a rollback option.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you can manage a model from a business problem to reliable operation and updates.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “What are the stages of an end-to-end machine learning model lifecycle, from development through implementation?”
    • “What methodology would you use to manage the lifecycle of a machine learning model?”
    • “What does the software development life cycle look like for an AI project?”
  7. How do you mathematically handle live data that's highly sparse, imbalanced, or unrepresentative of the environment your model encounters post launch?

Asked in 3 of 124 interviews · last asked Sep 11 · Scenario · Senior

    Show answer

For sparse data, I use regularization or Bayesian priors to reduce overfitting. For class imbalance, I use weighted loss and tune decision thresholds to error costs. For unrepresentative data, I use importance weighting when its assumptions hold. I validate on recent, representative data and collect labels where coverage is missing.

    • Regularization shrinks estimates toward simpler values when observations provide little evidence.
    • Choose class weights using error costs; evaluate precision and recall, not accuracy alone.
    • Under covariate shift, use weights p_live(x)/p_train(x), assuming p(y|x) stays unchanged and training data covers live inputs.
    • Weighting cannot fix missing coverage; clipping extreme weights reduces variance but introduces bias.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer checks whether you can choose mathematical methods, explain their assumptions, and recognize when better data is needed.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “How would you mathematically handle live data that is sparse, balanced, or unrepresentative of the environment a model encounters after launch?”
    • “What methods would you use to handle live data that is sparse, imbalanced, or unrepresentative of a model's post-launch environment?”
  8. How would you version code, data, and workflow artifacts to reproduce model runs and deployments?

Asked in 3 of 124 interviews · last asked Sep 10 · Scenario · Senior

    Show answer

I would link each run to a Git commit, immutable data, label and feature versions, and its configuration. I would record dependencies, random seeds and the container image digest, then store outputs under the run ID. Each deployment would reference that record and a versioned model, so I could restore a known compatible release.

    • Use a standard artifact layout and manifest; never overwrite versions or rely on “latest” tags.
    • Track lineage from source snapshots through transformations to features, models and evaluation results.
    • Keep versioned artifacts accessible; record hardware and library settings because seeds alone do not guarantee identical results.
    • Test rollback with compatible serving code, feature schemas and configuration, not just an older model.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer checks whether you can trace, rebuild and safely restore a model release with all its inputs and dependencies.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “How would you build dataset versioning and lineage so you can reproduce any model run using its data, labels, features, and code, and roll back safely?”
    • “What conventions would you enforce to reliably collect and version all workflow artifacts so any run is reproducible?”
    • “How would you ensure that model deployments are reproducible from both the code and data perspectives?”
  9. How would you build a scalable sentiment analysis pipeline, and which tools and models would you choose?

Asked in 3 of 124 interviews · last asked Sep 17 · Design · Senior

    Show answer

I would transcribe calls, remove personal data, and label examples as positive, negative, or neutral. I would start with TF-IDF and logistic regression, then test DistilBERT if quality is insufficient. I would use Airflow for batch jobs, MLflow for experiment tracking, and autoscaled containers for serving. I would monitor prediction quality, drift, latency, and cost.

    • Keep related reviews or calls in the same data split to prevent leakage; measure macro-F1 and per-class recall.
    • Choose the model using both quality and serving cost; a transformer is not always necessary.
    • Use batch inference unless low latency is required; add Kafka for streaming ingestion when needed.
    • Keep preprocessing consistent between training and serving; evaluate fresh labels before promoting a retrained model.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer checks whether you can start with a simple baseline and build a reliable, scalable pipeline around it.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “How would you start building an ML pipeline to classify reviews and call transcripts by sentiment, and what approach would you take first?”
    • “How would you start building an ML pipeline to classify reviews and call transcripts?”
    • “How would you build an end-to-end machine learning pipeline to classify customer reviews as positive, negative, or neutral?”
  10. How would you distinguish data drift, concept drift, and temporary data issues when production performance drops?

Asked in 3 of 124 interviews · last asked Aug 19 · Scenario · Senior

    Show answer

Data drift means input distributions change; concept drift means the link between inputs and outcomes changes. I first check data freshness, missing values, schema changes, and pipeline failures. Then I compare input distributions and label-based performance across time and groups. I fix data faults first and retrain only when validated changes justify it.

    • Monitor feature distributions for data drift; drift alone does not prove that performance dropped.
    • Use reliable labels to track accuracy, precision, recall, and calibration by group over time.
    • Concept drift needs evidence that outcomes changed for comparable inputs, not just different input frequencies.
    • Check whether anomalies resolve after pipeline recovery; account for seasonality and delayed labels before calling them temporary.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer checks whether you can separate pipeline faults from distribution changes and choose a response based on evidence.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “In a production ML system, how would you detect and handle data drift versus concept drift, and what metrics or signals would you monitor for each?”
    • “Suppose your ML model's accuracy drops from 91% to 78% in production. How would you determine whether this is data drift, concept drift, or a temporary data issue?”
    • “In production, how would you detect and respond to data drift versus concept drift for a deployed classifier?”
  11. How would you design and deploy an AI agent application, including its architecture and technology stack?

    Asked in 3 of 124 interviews · last asked Sep 28 · Scenario · Mid-level

    Show answer

I would use FastAPI for requests, LangGraph for the agent workflow, and an LLM API. Approved tools would handle actions, PostgreSQL would store task state, and a queue would handle long jobs. I would package services in Docker and use CI/CD to deploy them to a managed container platform after testing task success and safety.

    • Give tools limited permissions, validate inputs, and require human approval for high-risk actions.
    • Set step limits and timeouts; make retries safe so they do not repeat actions.
    • Track task success, tool failures, latency, and token costs without logging sensitive data.
    • Version prompts, models, and code; evaluate changes on representative tasks, release gradually, and support rollback.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer checks whether you can connect agent architecture and technology choices to safe, reliable production operation.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “How would you deploy an AI agent application?”
    • “What technology stack would you use to deploy AI agents in production?”
    • “How would you design and deploy an agentic AI solution in production, including its architecture and tools?”
  12. How would you ensure training and inference use identical, versioned feature transformations?

Asked in 2 of 124 interviews · last asked Jun 3 · Design · Senior

    Show answer

I would use one shared transformation pipeline for training and inference, not separate implementations. I would fit preprocessing only on training data, then save its fitted state with the model. Each release would pin the transformation code, dependencies, and input schema, with tests confirming that training and serving produce the same features for the same inputs.

    • Reuse saved scalers, vocabularies, and encoders; never refit them during inference.
    • Version and deploy the model and preprocessing together as one immutable release.
    • Test missing values, unknown categories, feature order, and batch versus online outputs.
    • For time-based feature lookups, use only values available at the prediction time.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer checks whether you can prevent training-serving skew through shared code, saved preprocessing state, versioned releases, and tests.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “In an end-to-end pipeline, how would you design training and serving feature engineering so that exactly the same transformations run in production and prevent train-serving skew?”
    • “In an end-to-end pipeline, how do you structure data preprocessing and feature generation so training and inference use identical transformations, and how do you version them?”
  13. How would you handle pressure to deploy a model before testing and refinement are complete?

Asked in 2 of 124 interviews · last asked Sep 23 · Scenario · Senior

    Show answer

I would explain what is untested and agree with stakeholders on the minimum checks needed for a safe release. I would weigh the deadline against possible harm, model errors, and how easily we can roll back. If those checks pass, I would limit exposure and monitor closely; otherwise, I would delay deployment or use a safer fallback.

    • Assess who could be harmed, how severe errors could be, and any legal requirements.
    • Separate safety and reliability checks from improvements that can wait.
    • Use a limited rollout only after required checks pass, with monitoring and a tested rollback plan.
    • Document remaining risks, the release decision, and who approves it.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you balance delivery pressure with risk, communicate clearly, and set firm release conditions.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “Imagine you need to choose between deploying a new AI model quickly to meet a tight deadline and spending more time refining its accuracy and robustness. How do you weigh those trade-offs and make a decision?”
    • “When deciding whether to deploy an AI model quickly or spend more time refining it, what factors do you consider in your risk assessment?”
    • “A stakeholder asks you to deploy a machine learning model immediately, even though testing is incomplete. What would you do?”
  14. How would you deploy a machine learning model for business intelligence or analytics engineering, and how would it be used?

Asked in 2 of 124 interviews · last asked Aug 31 · Behavioral · Senior

    Show answer

I would deploy a tested, versioned model as a scheduled batch job and write its predictions to the data warehouse. Analytics models would join those predictions to business data for dashboards and reports. For example, churn scores could help account teams prioritize outreach, with monitoring for failed jobs, stale scores, and model quality.

    • Batch scoring usually fits reporting needs; use an API when predictions must be immediate.
    • Keep training and production feature definitions consistent, and prevent data leakage.
    • Store prediction timestamps and model versions so results can be traced.
    • Track model accuracy when outcomes arrive, and measure whether predictions improve business decisions.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer checks whether you can deploy reliable predictions and connect them to real business use.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “Describe a machine learning model you personally deployed to production within your area of specialization.”
    • “Tell me about a machine learning model you deployed in your area of specialization and how it was used.”
  15. How would you deploy a machine learning model using Kubernetes?

    Asked in 2 of 124 interviews · last asked Sep 24 · Tooling · Mid-level

    Show answer

I would package the model and its prediction API in a container, then push the image to a registry. I would create a Kubernetes Deployment and a Service to route requests to it. I would set resource limits and health checks, then monitor latency and errors and scale replicas as needed.

    • Version the model and container image so releases are repeatable and easy to roll back.
    • Use readiness checks to block traffic until the model is loaded; allow enough startup time.
    • Request CPU, memory, and GPUs as needed; configure autoscaling using suitable metrics.
    • Use rolling updates or canary releases to reduce risk; consider KServe for managed model serving on Kubernetes.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer checks whether you can turn a trained model into a reliable, scalable service.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “How do you deploy a model to Kubernetes?”
    • “How do you use Kubernetes to deploy AI models, and what other tools or platforms do you use for different use cases?”
  16. How would you choose between cloud-based and on-device machine learning inference?

Asked in 2 of 124 interviews · last asked Sep 16 · Design · Senior

    Show answer

I would compare latency, privacy, internet access, model size, and cost. On-device inference fits offline use and fast local decisions, but device memory, power, and compute limit the model. Cloud inference supports larger models and central updates, but adds network delay and data transfer. I would test accuracy, speed, and total cost on real workloads before choosing.

    • Check response time and reliability, including slow or missing internet connections.
    • Check whether privacy rules allow sending raw data, such as video, to the cloud.
    • Benchmark accuracy, memory use, power, and heat on the target device.
    • Compare cloud usage and bandwidth costs with device hardware, maintenance, and model updates.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer checks whether you can weigh model needs, hardware limits, and operating costs against product requirements.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “What considerations would you evaluate when choosing between cloud-based machine learning infrastructure and an entirely on-device approach?”
    • “How would you decide whether to use a cloud-based solution or a GPU-based edge solution for computer vision inference?”
  17. How would you monitor model drift after deployment and decide when to retrain?

Asked in 2 of 124 interviews · last asked Sep 10 · Scenario · Senior

    Show answer

I would track input data, predictions, and model quality against a baseline from training or recent stable production. I would set alerts for sustained changes and check performance using actual outcomes when available. Drift alone would trigger investigation, not automatic retraining. I would retrain when quality falls below agreed limits, then validate the new model before release.

    • Data drift means inputs change; concept drift means the relationship between inputs and outcomes changes.
    • Check missing values, feature distributions, prediction patterns, and performance across important user groups.
    • Use thresholds and time windows that account for normal variation and seasonality.
    • Fix data pipeline problems first; retrain with recent, representative data when needed.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer checks whether you can detect meaningful changes and base retraining on evidence of model quality.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “How do you monitor model drift after deployment?”
    • “How would you monitor data drift and decide when to retrain a model?”
  18. What causes data drift?

    Asked in 2 of 124 interviews · last asked Sep 7 · Concept · Mid-level

    Show answer

Data drift happens when the data a model receives changes from the data used to train it. Causes include changing user behavior, seasonal patterns, new data sources, and changes or errors in data collection. Drift can reduce model accuracy, but it does not always do so.

    • Data drift is a change in the distribution of input data.
    • Causes can be real-world changes or problems in data collection and processing.
    • Concept drift means the relationship between inputs and the target changes.
    • Check model performance before deciding whether retraining is needed.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you understand what data drift is, what causes it, and its possible impact.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “What is data drift?”
  19. How would you investigate strong offline model metrics that fail to improve live business KPIs?

Asked in 2 of 124 interviews · last asked Aug 13 · Scenario · Senior

    Show answer

I would first verify KPI tracking, the deployed model version, and experiment setup. Then I would check whether offline tests reflect live traffic and serving uses the same feature logic. I would inspect thresholds, calibration, and feedback loops, then use a controlled experiment to test whether model gains improve the business outcome.

    • Check event logging, random assignment, sample size, and delayed business outcomes before trusting the reported KPI change.
    • Check leakage, time-based splits, data drift, and training-serving differences; compare performance across user groups.
    • Better prediction scores may not improve business value; review thresholds, calibration, action costs, latency, and fallbacks.
    • Model decisions can change future data and labels; investigate feedback loops using a randomized control group.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer checks whether you can separate measurement errors, model problems, and business decision problems through systematic tests.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “If offline metrics look incredible, but live business KPIs stall after launch, how would you diagnose the disconnect?”
    • “Suppose offline metrics improve after retraining, but online business KPIs drop. How would you investigate whether the cause is data shift, thresholding, feedback loops, or instrumentation?”
  20. What steps would you take to take a generative AI project from scratch to production?

Asked in 2 of 124 interviews · last asked Jul 14 · Design · Senior

    Show answer

I would define the use case, success measures, and data access rules. I would build a small prototype with an existing model, adding retrieval or fine-tuning only when needed. I would test quality, safety, latency, and cost before a staged deployment. In production, I would monitor results, collect feedback, and keep versions ready for rollback.

    • Build a representative test set and compare changes against a baseline.
    • Protect sensitive data, enforce access controls, and test prompt injection defenses.
    • Version prompts, models, code, and data; automate testing and deployment.
    • Plan scaling, timeouts, fallbacks, and monitoring for quality, latency, and cost.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer is checking whether you can turn a prototype into a safe, reliable, measurable production service.

    Other ways it was asked
    • “How would you take a generative AI application from initial design through production deployment?”

How this list is made

Every question here was asked by a real interviewer in a real job interview that a candidate ran MeetAssist in. After the call, the interviewer's questions are pulled from the transcript. Practice sessions, tests, exams and anything that was not a job interview are dropped.

Questions are rewritten so they make sense on their own: names of people, employers and clients are removed, and speech-to-text mistakes are fixed. Small talk, logistics and questions about one candidate's own résumé are left out. Rephrasings of the same question are merged, and the count is the number of different interviews it came up in.

The interviews come from candidates who use MeetAssist, so they lean towards software, data and AI roles: the shares describe these interviews, not every MLOps interview. Answers to the most asked questions are written and checked by an editor; a "common mistake" is shown only when reviews of real answers in these interviews show it, with the count.

124 interviews, 86 candidates, Feb 2026 to Oct 2026. Updated every month with new interviews.
