  1. How would you structure your validation splits to prevent data leakage or look ahead bias?

Asked in 5 of 320 interviews · last asked Sep 11 · Scenario · Senior

    Show answer

I would split data to match how the model will be used. For time-based predictions, I would train on earlier data and validate on later data. For predictions on new users or devices, I would keep each group in one split. I would fit preprocessing only on training data and keep a final test set untouched during tuning.

    • Use rolling time splits to test performance across several future periods.
    • Leave a time gap when training labels overlap the validation period.
    • Use only features available at prediction time, not information added later.
    • Fit imputation, scaling, and feature selection separately within each training fold.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer checks whether your validation reflects real use and keeps future or held-out information out of training.

  2. What are the differences between training, validation, and test data?

Asked in 4 of 320 interviews · last asked Sep 15 · Concept · Junior

    Show answer

Training data is used to learn the model’s parameters. Validation data is used to tune settings and choose between models. Test data is kept separate until those choices are final, then used to estimate performance on unseen data.

    • Training changes learned parameters; validation guides choices such as hyperparameters and when to stop training.
    • Using test results to tune the model makes the final performance estimate less trustworthy.
    • Fit preprocessing steps on training data only, then apply them to validation and test data.
    • Avoid duplicate records across splits; separate users and preserve time order when the task requires it.

What the interviewer checks: The interviewer checks whether you understand each split’s role and how to avoid data leakage.

How this list is made

Every question here was asked by a real interviewer in a real job interview that a candidate ran MeetAssist in. After the call, the interviewer's questions are pulled from the transcript. Practice sessions, tests, exams and anything that was not a job interview are dropped.

Questions are rewritten so they make sense on their own: names of people, employers and clients are removed, and speech-to-text mistakes are fixed. Small talk, logistics and questions about one candidate's own résumé are left out. Rephrasings of the same question are merged, and the count is the number of different interviews it came up in.

The interviews come from candidates who use MeetAssist, so they lean towards software, data and AI roles: the shares describe these interviews, not every Machine Learning interview. Answers to the most asked questions are written and checked by an editor; a "common mistake" is shown only when reviews of real answers in these interviews show it, with the count.

320 interviews, 221 candidates, Nov 2025 to Oct 2026. Updated every month with new interviews.
